Something definitely broke

So I did my drive out to my x's house to drop my son off and when I went to pull away I was greeted by a grinding noise and then a clunk. Looked around the car and didn't see anything out of the ordinary so I figured I would check it out when I got home. As soon as I started driving I smelled burning rubber like something was rubbing one of my tires. So, I pulled into a parking lot to look some more. Left rear coil spring is rubbing the inside sidewall of the tire. Here I sit nearly 70 miles from home waiting on my brother to come get me. I already know what the problem is (or at least what to replace and they're ordered already), just ranting/venting. Yay me! The car (04 GP GT) does have 268k miles on it.
 


To be honest I don't know if they have ever been replaced. I'm only the second owner of this car and I got it with 240K on the clock. I'm going to drive it until the wheels fall off, put em back on, and drive it some more.
 
I had the same thing happen to me. No big deal except the coilspring broke then it rubbed against the inside of the tire. Had to replace both the coil and tire.

From the looks of it, it's not the spring that broke, but the lower spring mount on the strut. Only took a quick look as it was dark and I was aggravated and unable to fix it anyway. I know it rubbed the tire for the half mile or so I drove it, won't know the extent of the damage to the tire until I pull it apart when the new strut assemblies come in. Positive thing is tires plus says the road hazard warranty will cover the new tire.

Let's see if that works. Anyway, it was the coil spring that broke. The tire rubbed just a few inches from the sharp part of the spring. Almost destroyed the tire. All fixed again though.

Yea. The photo didn't come through but I'm assuming that the break was on the lower part of the spring causing it to kick in towards the tire also kicking the lower coil spring support on a bad angle. Did they cover your tire repair cost for a new tire or did you have to pay because they felt it wasn't there fault? Glad to hear your back up and running:th_winking:

Tire didn't need replacement. The spring only rubbed it for 1/2 mile and tires plus said it's fine. Didn't do any more damage than running it with low pressure for a day or 2.
