Someone explain cams to me

Alright, I'm not looking to cam my car or anything but just want to understand cams better. I read a lot of threads about them but don't understand them. What do the numbers and things mean. Lift, duration and lobe etc. what do these mean for when the cars running? Hopefully you get what I'm asking but since I don't understand might be asking it wrong. Looking at the cam specs thread i don't understand the numbers and how ot effects the car. I've tried to search and find answers on here but the search on this forum isn't the best. I know this is a super-noob question so if it bothers you don't answer.
 


Thanks for the links they helped. I did try searching but didn't find any links that went into the depth I was looking for but L36 Killers did. The definitions and explaining how it effects things. Still having trouble wrapping my mind around deciphering the numbers and what it means exactly but am getting there.
