Some modding questions

Dropped GP GT

I have a 2006 GP GXP and am just starting to mod some. The budget is really tight so only starting with the little things. I'm gonna make a CAI, do a 180 tstat and ngk tr6ix spark plugs. I'm trying to figure out what to mod to get as much power out of this as i can. I already did a shift kit and tranny cooler, was the first things I did, lol. Like i said my budget is tight right now and not gonna do to much. Am I gonna be fine with those mods and not a tune or am i gonna have problems?

your fine, as those are not really mods. being a 06 you got one place that tunes that year and up. that would overkill. they are a vendor here. you see the banners up top the page.

Skip the thermostat, it will still run at 194º regardless.

And he has a GXP, HP Tuners supports all V8's from 05-08. I think even EFI live can tune them.

One of my intakes with MAF upgrade, tune and a ZZP downpipe will comfortably get you 25-30 wheel horsepower. http://www.getoverkilled.ca/ls4.html

180* stat is highly optional, stock is 187. Modding the stock airbox is better than building an intake on the stock tune. Remove the rear O2 pinch if you can't do a full downpipe, its as bad as the 97-03 Ubend. Fresh plugs and wires are always a good idea.

Don't even think about forgetting a shift kit and a Trans cooler in there too.

Very much needed.

So just skip the tstat then? You guys are awesome. Thanks for the information, i greatly appreciate it, feel free to send more, lol

Yea the thermostat is a lot less important than in the 3800 game. Having a all aluminum motor with efficient heads helps out a lot. your stocker opens up at 187 and the fans kick in at 192 regardless. Unless you have a custom operating system via hp tuners or efi live.

Edit: also go for the ms plug wires there odone of the best. Also the stock air box is trash even if you mod it it still a turd. Make a intake preferably a FWi

For a handheld you could get a diablo intune. Just watch your ft's. After I uploaded there "91oct no dod" the fuel trims were always 10 points lean. I had to change the injector slope to correct. (not a great fix, idle is always 10 points rich)

you don't modify the injector slope on LS vehicles for that very same reason. if you're off on fueling below 3500 rpm then you have to go back and figure out if it was your ve map that is off or your maf Is off. assuming either was spot on from the factory is never the case. This is why I highly recommend a a good tuner or a learning to do it youreself

^^ I agree, for some ppl that tune would be enough. I am not happy considering the price of a intune vs hpt. It was the first and last "can tune" I have bought. I will say the tranny does work better now.

With hpt there would be a learning curve, but I don't think it would be too overwhelming.

If you go the Diablo Intune Route, Definitely go with a LEW tune. Lewis does a great job as long as you data log correctly. You can always port your stock intake manifold if you have a dremel tool and polish and port your throttle body as well, if your mechanically inclined. Just make sure you do a little at a time and don't over do it, or you could see a loss in power and erratic idle. These are things you can do on a budget and make power without dropping a ton of money and make the feel of the car overall better. Shift kit as Blue said is a must for these cars! There is a sticky somewhere on how to make your own if your wallet is tight, and it works pretty good for what it is.

Not much money dropped, Looks good and a noticeable performance increase..... on a budget :)
