Simple Intake (pictures)

I just installed my new intake a few weeks ago and within a week it started throwing a check engine light at me. Took it to get looked at and as it turns out the oiled filters do terrible things to the MAF, im thinking about just taking the damn thing off unless anyone has any good ideas on how to resolve this issue.

Don't get an oil filter?

It's also a myth...did you oil it before tossing it on the car? If so...that's your problem.

I've got oil'able filters on both of my cars...never had MAF issues.

We bought this cold air fenderwell intake from Intense. INTENSE-Racing.com: INTENSE Fenderwell Intake Kit for 98-05 Cars
It took a couple hours for me to install but I could probably do it in less than half that time if I had to do it again LOL! I would have preferred an open cone inside the engine compartment for a couple of reasons. 1. easier to install and 2. easier to change/clean the filter. To get to the filter now I have to take off the wheel and plastic fender well. My son really wanted the cold air system so I caved. According to him and his friends the cooler air is better for the supercharged engine. idk... I have my doubts and I'm really looking forward to helping him get to and clean that filter now... :th_laugh-lol3: Having said all this the car does get a mile or two better mileage now and does have much better throttle response. The original air box seems to be fairly restrictive. I do like the PCM mounting bracket that comes with the intense system however. It is a GM part and I feel better not zip tying or using Velcro to hold down the PCM. As far as sound goes my son loves the fast and the furious whine when you stomp on the pedal but I'm old school and prefer the growl of a big azz V8.

Ricerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

F&F is lame.

For real.

But I don't care, it's his car...he can do with it what he wants. Now go buy some headers for it. Also...you could read the link in my signature and school your son about his own car ;)

I always thought that open cone was better for a sc engine because flow trumps intake temps in that case, being the air is going to be superheated going through the blower anyway.. might as well open cone and get big flow.

Modded beyond a 3.4" setup sure.

Anything larger than a 3.4"...it might be a little more heatsoak worthy.

We have read your mod post and it is awesome! Wheels/tires, headers, smaller pulley (not sure what size yet) and PCM are in the future for this car and in that order. lol

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Is my filter I used in this write-up not an oiled air filter?.. I once drove with NO filter and didn't even get a light.. can you tell us what the code was at least?

was it a brand new oiled filter on did you oil it urself? i smell overoiling. just get a dryflow filter.

You were right man. I went out and retightened everything up and now you can only hear suction. Musta came a lil loose after drivin it. THANKS A LOT. I LOVE THIS FORUM, its so helpful. I appreciate it bud

well, weirdly enough, it stopped bothering me after a while & i never got around to sealing it up like i was going to. the "rattlesnake" sounded kinda intimidating or something... so i left it alone.

but it started bothering me again today so i just popped the hood & made some adjustments. gonna go pick up a burger & test it out.

btw, although i never got to it myself, i'm glad i could help you with the idea! :th_thumbsup-wink:

i believe you because i've heard elsewhere of that being a problem...... i would suggest removing & cleaning it, followed by replacing your intake with a dry one. search the forums about how to clean the MAF.

Ok for the people not doing an open cone, here is an idea i got from another write up. use a roof vent seal to make a heat shield or to seal the filter into the fender.

images
Lowes and HD both have them.
here is a pic of the intake i made for my DOHC

i mark it as PVC pipe but you can use any type. ABS, Steel, Al, cheese... well maybe not cheese. but you get the idea. the flex elbows came off my DOHC and they are on the 3100's i got an extra one from the junk yard for almost nothing.... and it has a port in there for the IAT as well.
