Should my valvetrain be ok for an S1X cam?

As of now I have crow 105 springs, viton valve seals, and zzp LS style retainers along with 1.9 modified rockers (will be putting stock rockers back on when doing the cam). I'm getting pretty close to ordering an S1X cam from Intense, and need to know if I should order the Manley retainers with the cam. I already have the correct springs and seals, but my concern are the retainers. They are regular zzp LS style retainers, and not the "modified" LS style retainers. ZZP states that with the XP you need modified retainers, and from what I've learned so far, the S1X cam is almost the same as the XP cam. Should I leave my valve train the way it is, or opt for the Manley retainers? :th_scratchhead:

I'd say you'll need them. With the modded retainers they add .03 clearance and with the XP cam that's just enough to max out travel on stock heads. The S1X is .01 smaller on the lift than the XP and if you need that extra .03 to run the XP then I'm pretty sure that would go hand in hand with saying you need .02 extra to run the S1X since it's .01 smaller than the XP

S1x needs #130 intake valve springs, and whatever you want to toss on the exhaust side.

Modded retainers and short valve seals are a must... I usually suggesting milling the guides down if you have the heads off for any reason.

S1x and XP cams push ALOT more lift than advertized on stock rockers.

130's are not needed.

105's are plenty...also, running a stock chain/dampner is fine as well on 105's or 90's.

IMO, I'd get a new chain/dampner...
Crow 105's/matching retainers...no need to mill the guides...get Comp re-useable rocker bolts while your in there, new VC gaskets...aluminum LIM gaskets, etc. The Manley Titanium retainers are superlight compared to the stock or suggested retainers for the 105's. That'll help lighten up the valvetrain and let the car rev a lot freer. I noticed them for sure on my cam build on the blue car. I was running a much larger cam, with 130's on both intake/exhaust, milled the guides .100"...coming from an XP/LS6 Springs/Retainers...and putting in the XP/LS6's from a set of 1.84 Rollers with stock springs/shift points...it was for sure fun.

I have 105 crow springs with viton valve seals as of now. I was looking into the titanium retainers along with 1.6 yella terra rollers. That should really lighten up the valve train. A few people have told me to just reuse my stock rockers, but I think the rollers would be better, especially with a cam. Also going to run a double roller chain and be done with it. That way I don't have to worry about the dampaner down the road and I will be all set incase I ever decide to upgrade my heads and run stiffer springs.

if i do a cam i better have the cartels help

Yeah if you are thinking about one or the other, just go cammed. I did rockers, 3.4, headers, etc. thinking that's all I would be doing for mods and let me tell you that once you are bitten by the mod bug, it hits you hard! I just picked up a gen V and am in the process of gathering parts for my post winter cam/blower swap. I am sure that a couple years from now I will then want to intercool, drop pulley sizes, etc. Take their advice and do it right the first time! Don't be like me... Waste of time and money! ;)

Just run a new stock chain/dampner. Trust me. 105's aren't near as harsh as LS6's on the dampner. I only got about 44-45k out of a stock dampner on an XP with the idle set at 750. I'm sure with 105's...with the idle set a little higher it'd be more than fine...the S1X isn't that big of a cam.

Yeah but why not just upgrade to the double roller? Like I said that way I will never have to worry about the chain and dampener again. What if down the road I want to get better flowing heads and run 130# springs? Then I would have to tear everything down and swap to a double roller. And even if I keep it as it is, I would have to eventually replace the dampener at some point down the road.

Because the double roller has a life...most people who haven't replaced it after 20K are lucky...they aren't that strong, per say...and TONS of people have had them break...and it does nothing good for you. I busted a gear in like 3 places after only having mine for about 8k (I got SUPER lucky as the oil pump cover held the gear together)...got another one...ran it for 14k...no issues. Every local here has had nothing but bad luck from them...the chains stretch over the course of 15-20K easily...seen it.

Reptile is running a pretty nasty cam on 105's and a stock chain/dampner...pretty sure Trannyman95 is also running 130's on a stock chain/dampner...you just gotta let it idle higher, IMO that is the real kicker. Like I said...it's up to you...setting your idle around 800+ or whatever...and running 105's with a stock chain/dampner will be more than fine.

I heard the jp doubles are the ones prone to issues, and that the rollmasters are reliable.

It is hit and miss with both...which is why I trust neither.

In the end...your wallet...so, your call.

Just giving you my side of things...that's all man.
