Short Shifter [*]

This is a great write up. I just shortned my shifter and What I did was used a pipe cutter to remove the top 1.75 so that I didnt cut into the yellow plastic piece then used the dremel to split the shaft that I cut off so that it would release the yellow plastic stick then I finnished my cuts. also by me making my cuts. I cut the shifter so that it is at an angle when grab it. Looks and feels great. no more wrapping my fingers around to the front of the shifter. the button it right there.
 


I just did this to my GT. It was a little nerve racking, afraid of screwing it up. But when it was all said and done i was very happy with the results. I cut the groves that the knob slides into a little too wide so it rotates about a 1/4 inch but its not too bad. Overall i love it. Looks alot better than the tall ugly version.
 


Well this mod is not for performance at all. its just for looks. trust me anyone who does this will be glad they did. plus the feel is great your elbow rested on the center console is level with the shifter. although you will not notice this unless you try it.
 
yeah i love the way it feels. and yes i can still rest my elbow in the console while gripping the shifter. i do it all the time. it just gives it a sporty look and i wish i did it sooner. its tedious to do but well worth it. id do it again in a heartbeat. plus not to mention its free!!! that is if you have the tools to do it. :th_thumbsup-wink:

oh? i rest my elbow there at stock height, thought they were already level? oh well i like how it is now and i wouldnt change that. but thats just me
 


this a clip at the front of it, i just take my knife tip and fling it out and make it bound my HU then squeeze and pull

Yup...kinda dum :p

From the link... in the directions...
"Step 3. Shift down to 1st and use the flathead to remove the retainer at the base of the shift knob. Pull the knob straight off, removing the shift boot and base with it. There is a bulb in the base that needs to be disconnected. Separate the knob from the boot. It just pulls free."

I did this to my Fiero years ago because the aftermarket cd player wouldn't eject if I was in park because of the shifter height.

You can use a shift knob for a manual shifter too if you put a piece of copper pipe inside the knob to fill up the difference. This way you also have no button to push, you either lock the knob down on the shaft to bypass the button, or leave it floating so you push down on the knob to press the yellow plastic piece.
 
How would you get the grooves in the copper pipe to lock the knob down like stock? This seems interesting, especially if I can use a manual shift knob, just to look a little different...
 
i have had this done for quite some many years... i have it on my car domain.

nothing keeps it from coming off.... and i used a set screw to keep the knob from spinning as the screw fits in the new notch i cut. i guess if your knob is a ball it wouldnt matter if it spun.
 


I'm actually about to do this in my Regal for a change in shifter handle that makes my shifter boot too short. I'll get ya some pics.
 
Sorry i thought that the links worked. here are the pics. the first i used 1/2" or 5/8" copper pipe that was closed on one end. i cut notches in it so that i could put a screw thru it to lock the now knob on it. i had too sand the pipe down some so that the knob would fit over it. the next pic shows the difference in the shift linkage. i removed the plastic rod and made a new one out of 1/4" aluminum bar i had around. it rattled some so i later put some electrical tape around the rod to soften the rattle. if your using a stock type knob you will need to cut a new slot in the linkage and the notches for the pin/ clip.
