shifting from first to second

Hello. I have a 92 grand prix and If i put it in first gear it will automatically shift to second when I accelerate. I need to know how I can keep my car in first gear untill i let it up into second. In other words if i put it in first gear i want it to stay there. Any help with this would be really appreciated.. Thanks
 


Did you check the fluid/tranny filter? I know it might sound stupid, but thats what caused my car to hesitate from shifting into second unless i nailed it all the way to the floor....I started spinning the tires when i tried to nail it:th_laugh-lol3: At 6:30 am in my neighborhood going to school
 
actually the tranny is fine and full on fluid. I actually want the car to stay in first. If i drop it all the way down to first and take off it will automatically shift to second. I want it to stay in first till i manually shift it up to second
 
hmmm....I honestly dont know what it could be if its not the fluid, the filter or the switch. This is a problem I've never had sorry:(

Do you have a 2nd gear start? If not then it sounds like the tranny may be slipping.
 


ok sorry..I dont think i made my question clear. Let me try. First off the car runs fine and shifts like it should. What i am saying is that when i put it all the way down into first gear i want it to stay there. There is some kind of safety option that makes it shift to second. (probably to keep it from over reving) My question is how can i keep the car in first gear untill i manually let the shifter up to second. Hope this helps explain my question.
 
In short, you can't. The 4t60 and 4t65's automatically shift from 1st to 2nd no matter what you do. You can hold 2nd and 3rd all you want but you can not hold first.
