shifter locked up

i was wondering if anyone has had any probs with their shifter... my shifter locks up if i get in the car start it and try to put it into gear. so i have to put a screw driver in the shift release. i was wondering if anybody knew anything about that, i would appreciate any responses
 


i dont think it would be electrical, but it could be. i took me seat heater switch out and looked inside and i saw a bunch of junk in ther so somethin could be makin it stick. sometimes it wont even go into gear when i use the screwdriver. i dont know but thanks
