hey everyone i have a 97 gtp coupe a little after i bought my car in December of 2010 my shifter would get stuck in park and i would have to keep pressing the button to get it out of park at first it wasn't to bad but after a while it started to get worse. it started to get so bad id leave my car in neutral and just put the e-brake on, i know not the smartest idea.. so one night i was at my friends house and i let him move my car and i told him 3 times dont put the car in park and he did i guess its a habit, i know don't let others drive your car if there's something wrong with it lol. so after not being in park for a month or so it finaily locked up and would not come out so im out in the dark trying to get my car out of park to get home i had work in the am and it was late so i had to take the center console trim out and get a flash light and there a little plastic piece that i had to pull up to take it out of park. so the next day after work i came home and i showed a small stick in there to hold the plastic piece up and it work. i have had this piece in there for a while now about 4 months now maybe the only thing is i can take it out of park when the car isn't on no big deal it doesn't bother me to much im just curious if anyone has had this problem or knows what the issue may be. the shift lock release doesn't look like it does anything idk.

had this happen to me a while ago.... there is a little "compartment" under where you put your key in the ignition that has a switch or something (for the life of me I cant remember what it is called I hope someone does) and I replaced that....

then boom, it worked fine....

My gtp won't shift out of park unless I use the shift lock release. Been this way for about 3 yrs now.

thanks ill have to look into it where did you get that part im sure its not a common part you can pick up it prob has to be ordered i would think?

let me ask you guys this... when you are trying to shift out of park, and your foot is on the break, are you able to push in the button on the shifter or will it not push in at all?

the thing Im talking about is either a module or a relay...

IMO working on cars for 20 years now I have came across 2 things.
1. the safety switch disconnected in the shifter.
2. Attached to the brake peddle arm is a safety switch (hence press brake to shift) try those areas first (this is the most common)

Locate the fuse box in the glove box and verify that the BTSI fuse isn't blown. I had this issue a few weeks ago and it was a blown fuse. If it's blown, under your hood in the main fuse box their should be spare 10amp fuses.. just take one out and place it in the BTSI fuse slot. If you don't have spares they are fairly cheap to buy.

How do I know which fuse is the BTSI fuse? I looked in my fuse box and there are many 10 amp fuses, but nothing is labeled.

Here see if this helps.. I took a pic of the schematic.
