Series II vs Series III questions....

I am a little confused. I have a 2004 GTP that is making lots of rod noise. I have tracked down a motor that came out of the same year GTP. My top cover says that it is a series III and this engine block has a marking on it that says series II. There is a printed date on the valve cover that says 2004. Is it true that 2004 was a switchover year and they used up the series II blocks from years past? I am thinking that the series III is mostly if not completely a top end change and the blocks are identical. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

So far all the S3 motors I have seen have "Series II" on the block. Seems to be that GM never changed the mold for the block.

03-04 cars were hybrids of themselves...the 03's used the SeriesII engine and new '04+ transmission and the '04's used the leftover series II block and new trans...

My 06 motor has 3800 stamped on the block.. No series number. That being said. 04-05 l67's recieved (aside from the blower) all upgraded internals found on the L32 motor. So if you found an 04 motor, it doesn't have to be an L32 if you're trying to save a few bucks. Just simply swap the LIM and GenV over to the new motor.
