What is the difference? will the series three work in my 98GTP? I have a lead on an 80k engine and trans out of an 04 SSE. Will this work in my 98 GTP?
 


Motor will work, but the trans won't w/o some mods. The trans you want are from 98-02 from what I've read. 97 and 03 seem to be an oddball year, and 04+ things were changed even more.
 
ok, guy has this engine and trans. says its an 04 with 80k on it. he wants to sell both complete for $1000, said he will take $800 for just motor. I've already bout a $400 engine that wasn't any good and I've researched all the crap you have to go through to rebuild these engines not to mention the $$. He e says motor is in heated garage and he would stand behind it.
 
Ok, he wasn't 100% sure if was a 3, but it did come out of an 04 SSE with 80K. I need a motor bad and I'm leaning toward this one.
 


I just got a 43k na series 3 motor for 400bucks shipped off ebay. Thats a rip. By a l26 (series.3) na motor and top swap it with your 98 gtp stuff..you just need gaskets then. L26s are 04plus so they have lower mileage on average and are 500 bucks or.less all day in junkyards.
 
You are posting in the Supercharged section and talking about an SSE... aka an NA motor car.

First off.. no bonneville ever got a series III motor. Not from the factory, not ever.
Secondly.. It seems you want an SC motor, and no Bonneville after 03 got an SC motor from the factory.

You'd be wiser looking for a Lucerne etc L26 motor if you want an S3 NA on the cheap.
 
Ok we have narrowed this down. you are correct about the sse not having the sc motor. turns out not series 3 motor, is a series2 so no worries. thanks for all the input.
 
Thanks for the confirmation. The car in my sig is a Bonnie... I'm a bit of a nut on them and know them well.

Would you please take a moment and clear up what you are looking for, that way in case any of us know of a good price in your area... we can hook up a fellow forum person.
 
I have a 98 GTP. ( aquired a bad Knock just two weeks or so after I bought it.) I contacted a person in my area that had a SC 3800 for sale on CL. He is in the business of buying selling repairing cars, trucks etc.... At first he thought he took the motor out of an 04 SSE and thought it was a series 3 motor. I was trying to end my search for a good motor and was willing to put the series 3 in if it would work. Turns out the motor was a series 2 with 80K on it. Came with an uncut wiring harness the computer all the accessories alt.starter etc.... so I bought it for $800.00. Some may say Oh you gave too much, but I am satisfied. I paid a guy $400 for a motor and trans that after the fact found out the bearings were scared pretty bad. ( glad I popped the pan off and looked). Hence started my education on the 3800 engine. Learned alot the last few weeks, thank you all here for that. So now The job in front of me is to get this new (to me) engine in the car and see how it goes. Close as we can tell this latest motor is an 02 series 2 SC 3800 w/ 80k. The computer and wiring harness are all intact. nothing has been cut. So when I power it up I should be able to confirm miles right?

miles are stored in your dic cluster, not the pcm, or the engine, only the car.
 
The miles don't really matter anyways, as long as there's no knocking or other ugly sounds, you won't be able to tell an 80k mile 3800 from a 280k mile one. Just make sure you put all fresh gaskets on it, if it's dirty inside when you do the lim gaskets, change the oil every 2k until it starts coming out cleanish.

I'm not sure but think miles must be stored in BCM for 04+ GP's, even with having a swapped in 5 button DIC that was at wrong mileage the GM dealer was able to read correct mileage with tech 2 on my buddies 08 GP when they did a reman trans replacement under warranty.
 


When you do the gaskets, don't be tempted to take a rod or main cap off to check the bearings. The bolts aren't reusable as they are torque to yield. You can find quite a few horror stories of people who've done it and it gave them a 200 mile motor. Re gasket and use it as is.
 
Ok, finally got the engine swap done. Got it started last night and she runs well. All new gaskets and a degrease bath to engine and compartment. I put purple 75-95 oil in the blower, not sure if that is what I should have done ,but I haven't taken it out of the shop yet. This was my first American car engine swap (did a honda and an audi a few years ago to keep the lights on when the economy was tanking) post 1972 that I have done, so thanks everyone that put up with and answered all my newbie questions.
 
Pull that oil out of the blower. It could cause issues being so thick. If you choose not to use GM SC oil, then GM has said you can use Mobil 1 fully Syn 10-30.
