Sell it or keep it?

So Ive been thinking of selling my 97 gt coupe because one of the rear strut towers is rusted pretty bad. Its up for sale now but Im not sure if I should really do it. I have put alot of money into the car fixing stuff already and and maaco job(yeah I know but it actually came out pretty good and im a high school student) I still need to have someone weld metal into a small rust hole in the body and have that painted, plus a power steering leak and possible radiator leak. Ive got a friend who might be able to do the welding for me, Im just not sure if its worth it or if I should just sell it and buy a cleaner one. On a side note, my cloth driver door panel is ripped and I cant find a replacement anywhere, so if anyone happens to know where to find one Id really appreciate it. But yeah what do you guys think? I just need some opinions.

There's a few people here who can weld a new piece of metal over the hole if need be. Where are you located?

Radiators are cheap, about $100 from RockAuto. Vac leaks are likewise super cheap to fix, just spray carb cleaner around your engine bay and if the engine revs up, you've got a vac leak there. Odds are it's a rubber hose worn, just pull the offender out and replace.

As to the door panel, try a junkyard.

Hope this all helps :)

sell it. its a 16 year old car from the rust belt.

However, a used replacement will probably need 1000 in repairs too.

right, ill most likely just leave it up for sale and drive it til someone buys it. id like to fix it but i dont want to pay to weld metal onto a body thats alot worse in other spots, but then again with my 2-3k budget whatever i get will also need work, i just want to find one that has a cleaner body

but i also might just have someone weld new metal into that tower so i can drive it a little longer while saving for another

fix the little ****, strut tower just weld in a 1/8" patch. do safety first, cosmetics after. unless you highly into welding and fabrication and labor is cheap to none your better off getting something newer with other problems haha. just wait until your in the real world!

A patch weld is not a permanent solution, it buys you another year or three - just enough to get out of school, make some $, and buy another car.

As to a GTP, I would hate to think how much insurance would cost for a 16 year old... My inclination is "no".

my gtp cost less in insurance than a 6 year newer 160hp 4 cylinder with side air bags and all the safety goodies.

A questions...

How does it run besides all those inexpensive issues?

The only could be costly issue is the rust repair where you said it yourself you could have a buddy do for the cheapo ( I would say a 6 pack and pizza but your in HS so let's say... Some juicy juice and pizza)

Anything you can afford from the money that you sell it for will just being rolling the dice..you may be getting a lemon or you could be getting a decent car you just never know until you do your research and even then problems may still occur.

If you do it right it should be fine, you just have to make sure all the rust is cut out and gone. When you weld the new metal in it sand it a little bit and hit it with some self etching primer or epoxy primer. Should last alot longer then a couple of years, if its done right.

its pretty bad tho might need more metal than i was hoping. the other side is rusted too but not making noise. i was thinking of possibly just getting rid of it and financing a newer car but ill see how welding goes.

as far as how it runs with as much as ive repaired it runs fine, needs a new window motor eventually, brakes, has a power steering leak and possible coolant leak but theyre not bad leaks. other than that it hasnt given me huge problems

Those are cheap fixes ^_^.

I avoid financing a car for as long as possible. Payments suck. Unless your making very good money and will still have more then enough to live off.

yeah lol my mind just jumps around alot lol but yeah other than those i know one of the motor mounts is bad.
i talk about selling the car alot but i wont ive done too much to it lol

also, the car has once or twice randomly shut off after being started, like the gauges took a huge **** and went out lol, never really happened again so i didnt bother doing anything about it, think its anything serious?
