School Bus turbo

TheOtherNick

The mod from over yonder
This is my friends and my project for the time being. The turbo is off of a 12 valve cummis diesel out of a school bus. We had a piece of pvc hooked up to it to see if the engine would even spin it and it does. Stupid yes, but when we get her done tomorrow it will be sweet. I will have videos when we get it goin.

That is Polaris phazer 500 snowmobile with a cummins 12valve turbo soon to be hooked up and maybe providing some boost.

Ummm.... That does sound very safe. Something that helps a SCHOOL BUS move, that is being hooked up to a snow blower...

I like it!

I would wonder if the snowmobile could even get a turbo like that going to begine with. Is it going to have the exhaust flow to drive that thing?

Well yeah, but thats not a jet ski turbo, its off a diesel engine with high compression and much bigger cylinders to fill than found on a jet ski.

Tuuuuuuuurrrbbbbbbbbbooooooooo laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggggggggggggggggg............ssssssssssssssffffffffffffffff....gone.

that thing is going to lag like crazy, get a turbo off a VW jetta or passat those things are very tiny and would probably work a lot better

That turbo isn't anywhere near the right turbo to go with for a snowmobile. It's going to be dog slow and then you will hear a big bang when you finally get it spooled up, thats if you do get it spooled...

We know it is no where near the correct turbo for the set up or if any turbo would be. I also caught an error from me it is a yamaha not a polaris don't know what i was thinking. We got it hooked all the way up today and it moves some air. The problem is when the belt starts to get tension the motor bogs down and chokes for air. We are going to go junk yarding for a smaller turbo. It was never really ment to add performance we just had a turbo laying around and some spare time.

If it creates exhaust.. it can be turbo'd. I used to work for IR, and the genarators and air compressor engines we built, all used turbo's for power output. Very small turbo's on the 4 cyl John Deere motors and turbo's close to the size of a soccer ball on the cummins diesel motors.

We got it installed, but the sled does not make enough pressure to spin the turbo fast enough to move enough air to run the engine under load until about 5,000 rpm. Some how we got it to feather up to 5,000 rpm and it took off like a raped ape. Hopefully we find a turbo off a small car tomorrow that we could actually use. Nevermind the masking tape this was pretty much a mock up to see if we could get it to spin and hooked up.

Running that turbo would not be a problem if we found a way to bypass it until high rpm when it can actually move some air and not choke out the engine.
We are not too worried about blowing the motor there is not enough exhaust to really spool up the turbo. I do know the new polaris dragons that have a turbo run about 20psi not saying this sled could.
I don't know how easily we could find a vw turbo in the junkyards around here what other cars came with a factory turbo that would be found in the junkyard cheap all i can think of is dodge shadow, some talons, vws, none of which are very common in the junkyards here. Just got to look around i guess. We did find some cheap china made turbos on ebay for 120, but he does not want to spend that much.

saab made turbos i believe along with talons and eclipses i believe good luck man i think nissian maybe has a turbo out there?

Saab, older Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, VW/Audi, or anything brand with a small "snail" should work fine with a smaller engine.

Called around and could not find anything so it looks like this project is dead and the old pipe is going back on:( maybe some day we will find a turbo and get it to work right. (as right as a snowmobile with a car turbo could lol) Now i just have get a steering shaft hood and handle bars for my formula III ski doo that i landed up side down at 80mph after i caught a lip on the ice after water and went flying off a drift fun times
