Scanning ABS wheel sensor issues.

Does anyone have a good idea on how to get this info on a bad bearing or which sensor has issues? I know can possibly get scanned at Autozone or Advance if they have a scanner and likely will try that route this weekend but curious if anyone else has details on what they used to diagnose these ABS sensor or wheel bearing issues.
 


Yes had the same problem. Use a multimeter set to ohms. Pull the ABS connector at the wheel and use the meter to measure resistance of the hub sensor. With the sensor disconnected, insert the multimeter probes i to both connector contacts. Resistance should measure between 800- 1300 ohms. If no reading or infi ity, the hub bearing is bad.

Don't know about an 06 but worked on my 01, Took a TON of googling to find this info. I had ABS lite on and was told only dealer Tech II scanner could pull ABS codes. Sent the module out to be rebuilt, came back that it tested OK so no charge. That meant it was either in the wiring or one of the hub sensors was bad. Tested one by one and found no reading on the LR hub bearing. Replaced it and lite went out.
 
not even remotely true... snap on scanners will read abs and even some lower end scan tools like the newer innova 3150 or 3160 will read abs for some cars. i don't know if autozone or advanced scanners will tho.
 
Why pay to have it scanned when you can do it yourself with a multimeter? Interested to hear what OP says if he yakes it in to have it scanned

I am purchasing a code reader that has ABS capability so will give review of how that works when I get it in the mail.
 
Well bought a MaxiScan MS609 to try and scan the ABS but apparently it won't work for my older model or I am doing something wrong as it as well wouldn't work on my 2002 either... sigh. I hope I can get it working since I purchased the reader for this specific purpose only.
 
Harbor freight sells a scanner that reads abs codes for about $100.

And Bill, unless I'm way behind on my hpt updates, I don't believe it will read bcm codes. Unless they changed something in the last year or so.
 


I had the same issue with my 01, Discount Tire said their scanner wouldnt pull ABS codes, they suggested that I go back to the dealer. Had the same problem with my 01 Suburban at another independent shop. Not sure what specific scanners these shops were using but both were big operations so assume the equipment was decent. I was told there was something about the way the ABS module communicates to the PCM that was non-standard in GMs prior to 2004 and that only the GM Tech II would pull ABS codes prior to 2004. EHB says not true, but that has been my experience, of course you never know when you're getting BS from a repair shop so Im not ready to say EHB is wrong either.

Let us know if you make any progress with the new scanner....I gave up after i discovered the multimeter method.

Well I used my multimeter and all the hub bearings show the same OHM readings so they do not appear to be bad in a way that would be able to detect the issue

I have no idea where the EBCM is on this car since from what I read on numerous other post that the 97 has it in another area or location then any other year model.. Sigh I have been driving my wife's car for almost half a month because the steering is so hard when going slow. My wife's car has the same ABS issue though I see the hubs are missing the connector and it does not have the steering issue.

Seems 97 is about the worse year model to have of this car since would be the first year of it coming out in the body style.

Anyone know where this damn module is so that I can try and check the continuity to the wires to that and the hubs themselves?

The newer innova 3150 DOES NOT read abs codes... i repeat DOES NOT read the abs codes. I don't care what the packaging says. I owned one and it didn't do it, and believe i tried everything i could think of including calling the people at Innova. They just gave me some bs answer saying they'd let their techs know about the issuses. It's false advertising period. They know it doesn't read them on a lot of autos, but yet they're able to get away with it anyway, and of course i sent that piece of sh%! back. Another thing the 3160 doesn't read'm either. So i don't know where you're getting your information from, but it's wrong. Stop believing everything you read or heard.
 
So after all this I found out the connector on the passenger side was disconnected after I had changed out my serpentine belt.. I had looked and found a wiring diagram here so this may help someone else:

I printed that page out and started to follow the wires and decided that I would just check under the radiator and found the connector unplugged. Thinking damn no way this is the issue. Got back up and looked down on the side where the belt runs and I saw it was disconnected from the harness that runs to the EBCM.

Turned on car and no lights so fixed now so very glad about that but sad my dummy self didn't notice before.

The plastic that covers the side of the engine from the wheel wheel is what made it hard to see it disconnected.
 


Glad you found the issue! Did that fix the steering problem too? There is a. Correlation between variable assist power steering and wheel speed, in that it increases steering boost as wheel speed decreases and reduces boost as wheel speed increases.

Im holding the innova 3150 in my hands right this minute and sitting in my grand prix reading my front right wheel speed sensor code. lmao
 
I think he was referring to his 2001 and I can confirm that my reader could not on my 1997 or 2002. Whether it can for later versions is not what he was referring to here. I did end up keeping this since seller on eBay gave em a partial refund and it may come in handy for future vehicles I purchase.
