Rubber ring around trunk lock?

Does anyone know if you need the little rubber ring around the lock on your trunk? Mine is falling off and has wax on it so I was wondering if I could just pull it off or would that make a leak in the trunk? Thanks for the replies in advance!

It's there to keep water out.

Thats what I thought, is there anyway to get a new one or am I stuck with this one?
