rpm gauge stops working

i have a 98 gt, tranny recently rebuilt in oct 08' just had my routine oil change and as i was driving back the car sputtered and my rpm gauge dropped to zero and just stayed there, the car shifted normally although the gauge dident come back on until i pulled over and shut off and then turned it back on again. im not sure what i should check first.

any help and suggestions are appreciated thanks
