Rough Cold Startup

Hey All

Quick question for you. I have an 04 CompG with 102,000 on the clock. Everything has been just fine lately. My quick question is:

I live in Upper Michigan and we've been getting snow dumped on us and the temperature hasn't reached 26 in the last three days. The other morning I went out and started my car with the key it was about 18 degrees out and it started up like a diesel. It fired, but it rattled a bit and it seemed as though the supercharger was having difficulty getting moving... but it was fine after it had a couple revolutions or such. It idle perfectly and no codes or anything. It was very weird. Is this normal on the supercharged 3800 engine when its really cold outside? This is my first supercharged car so I'm all about learning every little thing about my car. =)

P.S. It is currently 10 degree's in Marquette, Michigan.... UGH

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

my car did this last winter.

was as cold as - 4 when i tried to start it and it did that but still ran with an 8 year old battery.

Plugs were changed in June right after I bought the car. They said my wires were still in good shape. They put NGK TR55's in her. I guess that was what was in it before I purchased the car. The battery is still the original and its an 2004..perhaps I should really consider replacing the battery...?

Try cleaning the throttle body...any DBW cars have start up issues if the TB is gunked up...pull it off and use some brake clean and make that thing shine.

For the '04+ cars its easy...4 bolts...done. They don't need a gasket.

I'm assuming you have a 2000 GT...yours is a rubber gasket...its easy...just take the 2 10mm bolts from the bracket off where the throttle cables connect. Remove your intake setup and there are 3 more 10mm nuts and the TB comes off. Take the sensors out before you clean it so you don't damage them. It sounds a lot harder than it is...also...when I do that on an N/A car...I take a box knife and remove that big chunk of plastic in the middle of your Intake Manifold right after the TB...

Here is an excellent write up for the 2004 Throttle Body Cleaning. I really should attempt to do this. How much would a garage charge to do this. Its only 16 degrees here and I don't have a heated garage. I should probably get my battery tested to. It very well may need changing. being 6 years old. How long do the AcDelco original battery's last or recommended to last?

My buddy has a bone stock '02 GT...and it still has the factory battery...he cleans the terminals once a year and uses terminal grease on them has the plastic caps over them...guess its just general maintenence. I DO KNOW...that its for sure pushing it on a nearly 9 year old battery. Same with my buddy's '04 WRX...factory battery...but its nasty...so who knows. As for the TB...if you have someone who knows what they are doing...it takes like 10 minutes tops...it takes longer to clean it than it does to take it apart and put it back together...man up and put on some gloves and get it done LOL

Well I stopped at Advanced Auto Parts and they checked my battery. It was time to change. Cold Crank voltage was 400 something...he said it should be in the 600-800 range. He took the battery out and it was fat. He said it was pregnant. So we will see when I start it in the cold tonight after work if she turns over better.

I still know I need to clean the TB and MAF. =)

I also have a 2004 comp-g. Night and day difference in firing the car up and also it became alot more responsive. Very easy to do, nothing to it. Just alot of scrubbing if yours looks anything like mine did, LOL!

^^Yup...I did it to my Cobalt with new plugs at 40K....actaully noticed about 2-3 mpg's better too.
