roof rails

If they actually do have a patent on them and are doing this then just make them either a little taller or shorter and it wont be what they patented. If its your own idea to make them slightly different then what can they do about it? :th_nanana:

someone just make a bunch and sendd them to people before gm finds out, and when they do you take the blame and we will all have rails . . . that sounds like a win to me

So....... No roof rail mold attempt? Haha And btw, I read somewhere that roof rails were meant to be sold as an option but they accidentally produced all left side rails and decided to cut their loss instead of producing as many right side rails

people have made molds of roof rails and there was multiple law suits from gm right after production

Can someone still get sued for producing a part that is Discontinued, no longer stocked, or sold?

I would think parts for cars 10 years old or more that have been discontinued for X amount of years would be able to be produced aftermarket. I could understand while in production it would be a fight for sales, but they haven't sold any in YEARS!

Has it been that long since GM had them for sale? Got mine from GM brand new in '09. Meh. It really would be neat to see someone start to produce these. Even if they did it out of a garage in low volume.

Not for sure when exactly, but I know its been a good 3-4 years since they marked them discontinued. Likely they were about to be discontinued, or already marked discontinued and you got one of the last produced. As long as there is inventory available they will still sell them, but will mark discontinued so the Dealerships/Seller know that once they are gone, they are gone.

I already have a set but I too would like to see someone producing them at a decent cost.

We should have some sort of lawyer or similiar on this site who would be able to decipher all that bullsh!t lingo and tell us if its legal or not. Anybody anybody anybody...

i dont understand it, really.

considering people make knockoff parts of literally everything that is still in production already...how can you not make roof rails? they dont have to be EXACTLY the same..

Just seems like one of those things that just aren't worth the time, hassle and or potential lawsuit unless your making multiple sets for a profit. Considering roof rails can be had for around $200-$250 how much are are you going to really save producing your own? I'm sure if you were to just make yourself a pair and that's all GM would never find out..now if you started selling them well yea you may be asking for trouble.

that's what i mean. someone should start producing them as an aftermarket part and mass produce them in china like everything else that goes on a car.

i wouldn't worry about a patent, those GM customer service people don't even come here no more lol

if you dont sell them on the open market, whos gonna know? and dont say they are made form a mold, just sell them as roof rails. who would know i say.

Would the demand really be there though? Most of the guys that want roof rails already have some and let's face it the Wbody market is pretty dead.

yup your right. but if you made 4 sets to cover your rails price, sell 3 sets off, it would be worth it. then sell them for a realistic price. and its a win win for all involved.
