rocker question

roller rockers vs modified

i know the roller rockers are supposed to be better, both performance wise and for durability of the engine, but how big is the difference? worth the $100 difference they are advertised for? im lookin to do this next spring so im starting to look in the for sale section to find used ones first but i dont wanna pass up a great deal on regular 1.9's if i try to hold out for rr's anybody had both? opinions on each?
thanks!

If youre getting a good deal on regular rockers go for it. IMO its not worth waiting and passing up on. Roller rockers have less friction due to the roller part which makes them better, however, its not like its going to gain you any power.

Rockers vs. Rollers like said above your not reall going to see any sort of difference...BUT...they are a lot easier on the guides IIRC, lighter weight, so there is less mass being moved, and since they are lighter...the car will rev a little freer. I had 1.84:1 Mag. Roller's from ZZP a couple years ago and I loved them...ended up going cammed though as the rockers weren't cutting it for my right foot. Keep in mind the 1.84's are jsut about as good as the 1.9's...except you save money becuase you don't need to upgrade the valve springs or spring retainers...if you wanna blow money on rockers...go balls to the wall and get LS6 springs and retainers and get the new 1.95:1 Roller's that Yella Terra just came out with.

thanks for the responses, and blue, what were your shift points set at for the 1.84's? also if there isnt much of a difference between the 1.84 to the 1.9, how much difference would you think to the 1.95's? thanks again guys

even with rockers, there would be no reason to go past 6000-6200 shift points. you just dont make power up there.

if i were to do rockers again i would do the 1.95 rollers. however, i did run modified 1.9s on stock springs with 6000 RPM shift points and never once had a problem with floating my valves. the difference in the ratios isnt going to net you much more power unless youre talking about 1.7s versus 1.9s. that might be a nice difference, but nothing extreme.

rockers are meant for cars looking for a little more flow that arent going to be balls out fast. if you want a fast car then you should just skip straight to a cam and be smart about it. this went against my reasoning since i was looking for 12s on a rocker setup, but im an ass backwards kind of guy. im one of the only people in (or out, i suppose) the 3800 game that still says intercoolers are stupid.

Im with you bio, I ran rockers first and went cam afterwards an never looked back. And intercoolers arent stupid, they do what they are meant to do for those of us who cannot tune. However, if you have an experienced tuner then yes, intercoolers are stupid.

thanks thats good to hear. i was thinkin just doin the 1.9's might try and find some 1.8x's like how blue was sayin just to be on the safe side and i dont like having the high shift points, i just wanted to see what was done before. And im not lookin to make it a crazy, balls out fast set-up. i wanna retain all my drivability and just add more flow. After this I may do an intercooler or meth, leaning torwards meth if i can find a tuner and learn, or someone who has the know how to tune it. but after that i plan on being done, at least with this car as my dd... after that i will probably get a car that i can dedicate to being stupid fast. thanks for the help and anybody elses opinions are also appreciated!

if youre going for either meth or an intercooler for a DD and want an easy solution to a hard problem then just get an intercooler. meth will not match an intercooler for bang for your buck and its massively easier to tune.

how is the mod'd 1.9 compare to the stock 1.6 as far as power?? i heard the mod'd 1.9 were the best for the price. i wonder what kind of 1/4 mile times can you get with the 1.9 mod'd rockers with all the 3.4 pulley supporting mods with a very, very good tune mid 13's? i heeard you only get 20whp at the max with these rockers also.:th_scratchhead:

i have modifed 1.9s and ran them on stock springs for 15000 miles no issues. then i got a steal on some ls1 springs and upgraded but it becomes a whole new beast on the top end. i plan on going cammed someday so i just kept all my stockers for when that happens. there worth the money, but like anything else you'll end up wanting more.

3.3" pulley on a '04+ car with no IC or Meth OR Headers? Yikes...and x2 on the cam. I used to have Roller's and sold them for a cam...its SO much better.

so flat out, cam over rockers? crap though, I dunno how to upgrade my cam but I hear its a biach, nor do I trust anyone to do that kind of work on my baby!

^^^ lol no....once I learn more about cars and the options I need, how to install and just a crap load more info on my baby I'll start buying parts. the problem isant the money, problem is lack of knowledge. when I look at ZZP products, theres alot of options and I dunno what half of them mean or even if I need them. some parts may contradict with other parts...Maybe soon I'll make a post of my goal and some of you guys can help me decide on the parts needed. But defently Cam :)

Your timing chain probably begs to differ. What chain are you running?

Oh get real. If you want to talk about that go to ClubGP and rant on all day about...I'd rather have a stocker than that DBLRoller crap that breaks every few thousand miles...my timing chain you ask? Stock one...still the same stock one that was put on from the factory 88K ago...just a new tensioner...over 40K VERY HARD miles with a XP and sub 3.2" setup.

Imagine if these cars had timing belts?

I don't think a GM ever will though. New high feature V6 is DOHC and still has timing chains.
