Rim Painting Opinion

Ok. So I have the stock GP rims.... And I'm tired of the cruddy chrome it comes with... So I was thinking about painting them.... I kind of want to go with a black/white theme with my car. My car is white. I'm Painting the lower bumper on the front and the back black. Would this look dumb or what are your opinions?

Cant tell from the pic, but I do think the Torque Stars look good black. Did them to mine, and they turned out way better than I thought they would.

If you do paint them black, paint the lip a different color, otherwise you'll have to keep tire shine on all the time, or they dont look good. (tire being a lighter color than the rim looks bad IMO)

Grand prix rims don't come in in chrome. If they did, you couldn't paint them anyway.
I assume you're talking about polished torque stars?

Yeah. I'm not looking to spend a small fortune. I just want something I can do myself for cheap. I've never looked and payed attention before... What are the torque rims made out of?

aluminum alloy.
Powdercoating isn't that expensive, and quality and duration compared to spray paint is more than worth it.

Or just get some new rims.

Powder Coating is a much better option, as long as you have someone nearby that can do it, since either driving a long was = lots of gas, or shipping = lots of money.

I've had good results with painting them, pushing over a year now, and not a single chip/flake/bad scratch.

I sanded mine down, did 2 coats of self-etching primer, 4 coats of paint (used a high heat ceramic black from the local auto parts store) and 4 coats of clear.

As far as a color for the lip, I'd go with whatever you want to do. You could leave them polished, or paint them, up to you.

i'm a fan of painting rims if done right.

i'd like to see torque stars in gunmetal! i think that'd look great w/ an accent color!

I've painted chrome wheels and had outstanding results. It's just like anything else. Proper preparation is key.

I'm going to paint them since no one remotely close to me does powder coating. Anyone know a good how-to write up on painting rims? Thanks for your input!

White 97-03's look good with white rims.
They do? I would think they would blend in to much with the car.

Get them done in all black, then again I'm parcial.

Make sure that they paint shop can powdercoat aluminum if you decide to go that route.
