My daughter came home with her '92 Grand Prix 3.1, w/3 automatic speed transmission tonight complaining that it wouldn't go into reverse at school when she went to leave. I checked it out and the tranny fluid is a pint low but otherwise clean and works fine in all forward gears but sure enough, reverse acts a bit as a neutral. You can feel it kick into reverse and trying, the reverse backup lights come on, but it acts likes like something slipping in the reverse gear. I guess if it's in the transmission, I would hope they could just get in there and replace a reverse gear component easy enough. Anyone have any experience on that?

Sounds like it needs a rebuild/new trans.
I believe the reverse has its own band and may have let go.

Did u put more fluid in to bring up the level??
Thats first.
If u can get a tranny treatment, like lucas, even enough to bring the level up, and see if that helps.
and just FYI, check fluid while engine is running in park, and on a level surface.
