resetting SERVICE ENGINE SOON light

I have a 2002 GP with V6 naturally aspirated engine ,is there an easy way to reset the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light. I do not have the code reader to do this ,will disconnecting battery reset light ,how long should I leave the battery disconnected ?
I am sure the light came on due to a loose gas filler cap.

if it was a loose cap and you made it tight the code would go out on its own.

being you have no scanner you have no idea what code you have, so get it scanned. follow the code to repair it.

to reset the pcm un hook the battery for 30 minutes or over night. but the light will come back if you have not fixed anything.

30 minutes isn't necessary. 30 seconds will do it. Hell 10 seconds will do it, but as mentioned go get it read so you know what you are dealing with. You could also buy a cheap reader on amazon or eBay.

No idea what the light is and you want to turn the light off. Mask the problem, then wonder why engine seized or your brakes failed, etc. Just get a scan, or waste a little time and have a repair shop diagnose the problem, there's nothing that says you must then do the repairs... You can then take the car home and fix the problem yourself if you're handy. Not sure what you're asking... It's different when someone knows what the code is, ie, evap, and wants to just turn it off...

Good Luck!

Re: resetting SERVICE ENGINE SOON light ( UPDATE )

UPDATE ...

I had reset the light last month ,my error came back again ,about 1 month later, so I got a code reader.

The code is P0442 Evaporative Emission Leak Detected ( small leak )
again I was able to reset.

where should I look , can it be the gas cap I do see small areas of broken rubber around its seal on cap ?

I had this same error code about 3 years ago ,checked out by a shop and they felt it was just a loose gas cap ... hasn't come back since ,but has reappeared in the last month or so twice now.

id start with a new gas cap. check for a busted vac line off the tb to the evap solenoid too. those are the easy things to check. after that a smoke test would be a huge help.

P0442 "small leak" is from a hole less than 0.040", is usually due to leaky gas cap, or in my case the filler neck to the tank was rusted and had a pinhole. needed a smoke test to find it.
P0440 is "large leak" > 0.040", broken line, gas cap totally off, etc.
