Replacing struts??

Hi everyone: I had a quick questions about putting in struts. I was told I needed front struts on my 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix. I figure I can do it myself, but I was wondering how hard it is and what kind of struts I should get. Thanks.
 


You will need strut spring compressors. After you do the swap you will need to align your car. Also I would buy sway bar end link as if they are stock you will probably break them trying to loosen them.
 
it is an easy job.....took about an hour to do mine....make sure you get new strut mounts too.....or even easier get loaded quick struts
 
Just a few weeks ago I replaced the front struts and ball joints on my '02 GT. I did a lot of reading and research beforehand and finally decided to buy the Monroe Quick-Struts (from Amazon). Yes, it's a bit more expensive than replacing just the strut, but you get the peace of mind in knowing that you have all new mounts, bearing plates, springs, etc. After all, if your struts are worn out, chances are your springs are weak and the other parts aren't far behind. Going the route of Quick-Struts also eliminates the hassle of compressing springs and swapping all the old parts over to a new strut. Installation of the Quick-Struts was a piece of cake while the ball joints were SOB's! The new Quick-Struts made a world of difference in the ride and handling of the car, so I was satisfied that I made the right choice. At the urging of my inspection mechanic, I bought and installed camber adjustment bolts with the new Quick-Struts. After I installed the new struts, the car went straight to the alignment shop for an alignment. I'll be installing new rear struts very soon and I expect the job to be about the same. Good luck!
 
Thing is, Monroe Struts suck.

KYB>everything else.

Its not a hard job, but make sure you have a big enough air compressor for the spring compressor.
 


I wint with monroe quick strurts like Bill said your get all new stuff and handling was greatly improved. I did all 4 struts, lower control arms, sway bar, outer tie rod ends, 4 rotors, and 8 pads. Took about 6 hours counting lunch break
 
I don't know what your basis is for saying that Monroe sucks, but all I can tell you is that I read tons of customer reviews on many different web sites before making my decision and I don't recall reading any negative reviews on Monroe's. On the other hand, I read a number of negative reviews on KYB's and other brands, most of them saying that they made the ride too harsh. A number of guys removed their KYB's and replaced them with Monroe's and were well satisfied. I guess it's all a matter of personal preference and opinion. Maybe it will turn out that you're right about Monroe. Only time will tell. But for now, I couldn't be more pleased with mine and what they did for my car.
 
monroe's are good for a stock suspension.

KYBs are much better for a sportier, or lowered, suspension.

Well yes, if you want a mushy, floaty ride then Monroe's are for you. I just read a lot of guys on ClubGP had blow with very low miles and of course they ride soft.

GR2s tighten up the ride just enough to rid of that floaty feeling.

But if you like them. Good. I think anything will beat some wore out stock suspension.

Excatly what I did took out the kybs after about 5,000 miles (still have then in my garage anybody want then for local pick up make me an offer pick up only, they are fully loaded with springs and all) Much better ride.
 
Wow I read the first couple of posts and was like 'these guys are crazy!' The whole spring compressor thing is unnessary unless you are trying to install a combination of performance parts or something. If you are just trying to get your struts back to the way they were originally, you can just get some loaded struts from completestruts.com. DON'T get any of the cheap ones off ebay because they are JUNK. I've had the unity struts on mine and they are very much like Monroe's with stiffer springs and they were a better price. I used to like Monroe but their new struts suck because they are made in some third world country. Monroe Quick Strut repeated problems????? - Car Forums and Automotive Chat

I just replaced my pass rear with monroe quick strut for $94. I know i shouldve done both but just that side was sagging alot. Im happy with my purchase and the ride. Plus it was sooo much easier putting in!

Cheaper than monroe is a bad sign.

Monroe premium isn't the greatest to start with.

Their econo line isn't worth installing unless you're on a budget or getting rid of it.

Always replace in pairs.

and are here to stay or what?
 
If i buy the complete strut do I still need to compress it. Also do I really need to buy new end links for my sway bar? I just replaced the sway bar porbably about a month ago. lastly, thank you for all the responses.
