Replacing stock air box with K&N Cone Filter

Im wanting to get rid of my stock air box and just leave a K&N Cone Filter in its place. After starting to take apart the box I ran into a smaller grey box with a bundle of wires coming from it. Can I continue to remove the box and install my filter and just leave that box hanging there? What is it?
I tried uploading a picture of it but seems to be not working.

its the cars computer, or PCM as stated above. mine just sits below the filter too, here what mine looks like, sorry for the poor picture quality, its a cell phone pic before i got my camera but i dnt have the car right now or i would take another pic, but just do you get and idea here is my short ram

Yes it is the PCM,you should at least fasten it down with a cable tie, don't know bout your city but here in MPLS,the roads suck...potholes all over and its best not to have the PCM bouncing around.

So its the PCM, Ok. Thanks guys, this is just a temporary mod, I will eventually get a full Cold Air Induction System. And I will definately fasten it down, these Alaskan roads aren't the best haha.

I know it sounds dumb.. or like I am dumb, but I know nothing about cars. I used to buy a brand new car every 3 years and never did a thing to them. I'm looking to see what things I cn replace on the car I have now to make it run better. I mean it runs pretty good right now, but since its 10 years old i would like to put some new parts on it.. Just don't know what to replace and what I can do myself.

see the how-to on a fenderwell intake. but just leave the pvc piece shorter. better yet, just run open cone

Any open cone filter will give you prolly 5-10 hp over the very restrictive, silenced stock air box...if you go to a full cold-air intake(cai) or fenderwall intake (fwi) you gain at least another 5-10 hp...the more fresh, cool air you can get is very much appreciated by your engine..specially if your supercharged.. even na (naturally aspirated) it helps a lot.. dont think of yourself as dumb not everyone knows all this stuff...Later

What Bio said. Warm air=better mileage, less power. Cold, dense air=less mileage, more power. Block off the engine heat with a cone will help but having an open cone in the heat from the engine will hurt power.

So if I put an open cone filter like the pic above I can get better mileage? will the power be less then the stock? I'm not to concerned about power, but would like to get better gas mileage. How much better? Can someone post some links on what I should buy?

you wont get better mileage because youll hear your motor more and youll in turn use the go fast pedal more.

Whether you get more power or mileage is debatable,I guess, but the bottom line is it definitely MUCH cooler sounding so I'd do it just for that, but I'm easy to please

Well, pardon me I am not a human dynamometer, just guessing...I shall from now on keep quiet around here...

Your guesses are probably way too generous.

Just because someone says something negative or contradictory to what you said you're going to be quiet? You never debate anything with anyone do you...
