replacing steering wheel

I have the rubber steering wheel in my 08 grand prix. I want to replace it with a leather one. I'm not sure if I want to mess with it if it is too hard to do though. I was wondering if anybody could help me out with how to go about removing the steering wheel. Thanks for any help.

there's a tutorial floating around on how to paint the steering wheel which should show how to remove some stuff.

alright so I've been trying to get the airbag assembly off for awhile now but I can't get it to release. Does anyone have some pointers because I can't seem to figure it out :th_scratchhead:

ya I just couldn't seem to move the bar. I went to the junk yard today and found a leather steering wheel without the airbag. I tried getting it off but it wouldn't budge. I had all the bolts loose but it just seemed like it was still attached some how. Does anyone know of a video on this?

It's like harpooned into the steering wheel. You've got to like jimmy it out. That tutorial pretty much covered it. A movie would be awesome, but you'd have to use one of those little cameras with the lights on it that they like... inspect urethrae with. Just showing a guy puking a wire into his steering wheel probably isn't much help.

It's pretty simple. I've done it numerous times. Turn your wheel about 90 degrees, take a small flat screwdriver. Slide it into one of the holes, feel it catch, then rotate the screwdriver. Should release, then do the one on the same side, then do the other two. Make sure you hold up on the side you already removed.

wow it come off just like a regal's air bag. i didnt have them right angle screw driver things, so i used the bit from one of them screw drivers that has a small and large philips or flat on either side and a pair of vise grips to hold the bit.

pop one open, hold it up, then pop the one under it so one side is up, then do the other side. if you dont keep a steady up pull they like to lock up again real fast on you.

you have a few wires to deal with so dont just rip it off. and un plug the battery first.
