Replacing radio

Hello all.

I have a 2005 Grand Prix base with the original single CD AM/FM radio. It will rarely read any CDs, half the lights are burned out, and the print has worn off most of the buttons. I was looking at just replacing it with a used functioning OEM radio. I'm not interested in an after market solution.

I've read some other posts and if I'm understanding things correctly, even if I replace it with the same factory radio from another GP the radio would be locked until I take it to the dealer for them to reprogram?

I am unsure on the 2004+ radios, on the older cars theft lock wasn't automatically enabled so often you didn't need a code. The 1800 number and process for unlocking was floating around Google for quite a while should still be able to find it.

Or just take a factory radio and swap parts. There is a post on how to swap out the lights its very easy to do. That's what I did. Find someone parting out and ask him for the radio face only, which is plastic if the buttons are in good condition. The lights can be found online. I went to bulbtown.com to find them.
