Replaced harmonic balancer now it barely runs

'04 GP, replaced the harmonic balancer last night. I had replaced the crankshaft position sensor about 2 years ago. After installing it, car started up just fine, idling in my garage. This morning started it up no problem and she drove fine for about 25 mins. After that it just started dying. I was able to pull it off the negative cable for 10min. It would start up a little better but still die as I tried to drive it.

Now I'm not sure if it is or was the crankshaft position sensor or potentially my ICM, i did unplug this to bump the engine to get the crankshaft bolt loose. I installed a Dorman 594-312 so it is the right part. Not sure if it might be the PCM, or camshaft position sensor or not, that wouldn't be fun. If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it I'm stuck in a parking lot until I can get it limped back home or to a shop.

The crankshaft position system variation learning feature calculates the reference period errors that are caused by slight tolerance variations in the crankshaft, the crankshaft balancer interrupter rings, and the crankshaft position sensor hall effect switches. The calculated error allows thePCM to accurately compensate for reference period variations. This enhances the ability of the PCM to detect misfire events during a wider range of engine speed and load conditions.

The crankshaft position system variation values are stored in the PCM non-volatile memory after a learn procedure has been performed. If thecrankshaft position system variation values are not stored in the PCM, DTC P1336 will set. The learn procedure is required after the following service procedures have been performed:

PCM replacement
Engine replacement
Crankshaft replacement
Crankshaft balancer replacement
Crankshaft position sensor replacement
Any engine repair which disturbs the crankshaft or the harmonic balancer to crankshaft position sensor relationship.
 
sounds about right, but i've replaced both my PCM and my Crankshaft position sensor and not needed one. So while i'm guessing a crank relearn is the issue, I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't.
 
Good to know, I'll at least have the shop do one and see if that fixes the problem, thanks. I'm not sure if they did one when they replaced my CPS. So maybe the dampener is a bigger issue, I could be wrong. But I'll have it done and see what comes up.
 
Turns out it is a bad ICM. I unplugged it last night to bump the engine to get the crankshaft bolt loose. It must have been a short, I did forget to unplug the neg. battery cable, which is my bad, but the ICM was original and had 204k on it...
 


So it was not the ICM. It stalled out on me on the highway. This problem seems to come up when the rpms are high and or the engine is warm. I'm sure if I let it cool it would run good for a bit but I still can't figure out what it is, I can check the CPS sensor and harness but anything else?
 
its usually that the harness is rubbing through at the compressor pulley area once disturbed. ive seen it personally about 16 times, almost always about 10 minutes to a few hours after someone was screwing around in there
 
So do I replace the CPS harness then. Now that you mention it when the trouble starts my A/C didn't engage as I was turning that on and off before. I went to go turn it on and it didn't kick on. Could it be the same sub harness or do I have to replace a larger harness??
 
its a short harness, goes to the cam sensor the crank sensor then up to the top and plugs into a plug in top of the lim near the dog bone mount on the engine.

you can change it with the balancer still on. you need a pick in the hole of the plastic cover to lift the lock on the crank sensor plug.


my car started to toss icm codes and a crank sensor code off and on, of course it would stall out when driving it.

this is what i found with my harness. all chewed up. bare wires showing. no good.

if i were you being it seems the car is not drive able. take your harness out and inspect it before you buy a new one.
 
I always thought that big gray connector and wiring was for the the ignition coils, not the harmonic balancer. Boy was I wrong lol.
 
the fat part goes in the icm, the other larger square plug is on the lim, the ground loop gets grounded on the side of the head, then the two at the end are cam and crank plugs.

Oh, so then I was partially correct lol. But I did not know the harmonic balancer was part of that harness.
 


balancer is not, the crank sensor is. to change a crank sensor the balancer has to come off. then you un plug it, its when your moving the plug around that the harness might show all its faults.
 
fyi ive come across damaged wires in the radiator support Passover from people getting rowdy installing the engine mount brackets or just rubbing through if some jackass leaves the plastic wire guide out after a condenser/radiator replacement.

fans not working, ac, etc
