remote steeing wheel controls

Anyone used the remote type steering wheel control for their car instead of the plug in type? I was told by the stereo shop that they wouldn't sell me one because they were junk. My deck doesn't have the input for the plug in type, so I will probably end up buying a newer one. Just wondered if anyone had any input on these.
