I am looking to get a new a car soon-ish depending on how often my GP wants to nickel and dime me(I fix everything only to have something else break within a week...). It might be a year or more until I get my new car but I just would like everyone's opinion.

I am hoping to find something that is:

Able to work on my self
Reliable
Highly moddable
Quick
I Can fit into(6'3'', 200 lbs, I barley fit into my 04 GP, almost hit my head on the roof)
Looks non-ricer, I.E. Not an STI
Used
Less then $15K

I have been looking at a GTI but everyone says they are worse to work on then the 3800 and are expensive to maintain. Are the TDI's any better in reliability factor? Any thing else I should be looking at?
 


You want something "non-ricer" but are looking at GTI's?? Sounds counter-productive. GTI's are the epitome of rice.
 
STI isn't rice looking. Why not stay with the GP? You know how to work on it, parts are cheap, and depending on what you do you won't have a car note.

They both have similar rims, red with black outline. GTI screams rice and there is a certain "class" of people that you see driving them, ie douchebags. Also, what you hear is true. VW are a pain in the ass and expensive to maintain.

True, the red outline is annoying. I only know of one person who drives a Golf and he is a douchebag, he does 140 in a 50, everyone else is doing 70 though... Honestly, the most annoying drivers I find drive Japanese/Korean cars. They seem to be the most likely not to use turn signals, cut you off or generally be an douche.

Is the TDI any better to maintain then your standard VW?
 
That's funny because the most annoying drivers I see are ones driving domestic full size trucks and SUV's. I drive a lot for my job, usually 800-1000 miles a week so I see a lot of douchebag drivers left lane loafing, cutting people off, not moving over to let vehicles merge, etc and they come in all forms, but almost EVERY GTI I see driving around is driving like an asshole.

As for the TDI do you know anything about a diesel? The main benefit of the TDI is the fuel mileage. They seem to be reliable, but as with any other VW when maintenance is needed it is not going to be cheap.
 


It seems if you keep up on regular maintenance, oil changes and the norm, the TDI seems to be reliable. I'm not one to skip regular maintenance, I do it myself though. Ive just have had bad experiences with mechanics. I just replaced my power steering lines and pump for $125, my mechanic claimed the rack was leaking, $800, and the lines would cost $400 to replace, each. I never went back.

In NJ you get lifted mud trucks and deuce and halfs, they are usually more respectable when driving, they let you in and are generally nice. The Audis/BMWs/Porsche/Afla Romeros tend to use turn signals but they do the speed limit(not a good thing in NJ) or they speed past you doing 100+. Then you have the Asian car driver whom just don't car about anyone else on the road.
 
Yeah I was looking at some of the TDI VWs and they seem to run for a long time, there are a lot of them for sale with over 250k miles on them, plus they are really good on gas. Read a lot of reviews on them and other than the normal maintenance stuff and a timing belt every 60k miles they will run for a long time.
 
first gen CTS-V with about 100k miles can be had for 10-15k depending upon condition and parts existing on the car. i seriously love my car.

a GTO i could see being shot down because it's a really impractical car if you ever need to do anything besides drive it. you know, fit things into the back seat.

and my car has infinitely more features than the GTO does at the same exact price point.

OP, if you want to afford to work on it and work on it yourself, a euro is not the direction you should be pointing yourself.

Well I know that... Just saying his reason was that it would have problems just like a GP, nothing logical like your points. And I can fit 2 tiny people in the backseat and almost 5 bags of groceries in the trunk...C'mon! You may have more features but its really all just extra crap to break and cost a bunch to replace. I remember all the fancy flashing lights and digital displays in my moms old 87 Buick Park Ave, all the extra features breaking ALL the time on that thing.
 
when things break, you just disable them. this is america where i don't need no flashy lights telling me what to do.
