Rear view mirror removal

I have searched high and low for how to remove the mirror on my 2000 GTP Daytona with a Donnelly NON-ONSTAR auto dimming mirror, but cannot find a definitive answer. Some people claim there is a torx set screw, which I do not see anywhere. Some say that I must stick a screw driver into the slot on the front until the clip releases, but I cannot seem to feel anything in there that does that, and I am afraid of cracking the windshield. Lastly, some people insist that I pull "straight down" and do not slide the mirror on the bracket at all, which makes absolutely no sense to me, as the mirror would fall off on its own if this was the case. I would prefer not to pull off the actual metal mount from the windshield, but rather unmount the mirror from it. Any tips are appreciated ESPECIALLY with pictures or a video.

some are just wedged on the metal tab thats glued to the windshield, try a wiggle and firm up ward pressure or a light tap or two to free it.

most of the time the button on the glass will just rip off the glass, doing no harm, you just glue it back on by itself for a day and then re hang the mirror on the button.

should the button come off its now super easy to see whats holding it on the mirror.

when gluing it back on, use a razor blade and cut all the glue off the metal button, do the same to the wind shield, i use crazy glue only now, its the same as the other crap that cost more. wet the button back with glue, hold it on the glass for a minute, let it sit 24 hours in the sun if possible with no mirror. next day rehang your mirror.

Do NOT try to force it off. You will need to take care while doing it. The mirror tab adhesive can potentially be strong enough to take a chunk of windshield with it if too much force is applied.

i have seen that thread. My mount is not the same...I'm not sure how much different it is, but it is different. When fiddling around in there with a flat head, I noticed that it did not feel like the one in the thread LOOKED...If that makes any sense to you.

Great chance to take a chunk of windshield off, crack the wind shield and or break the mirror... They always stick when you want them off, and come off when you try to make em stick! Lol... As mentioned though, if you do get the button off, you must remove ALL the glue residue from the button and glass or when you put it back, or it will never adhere. The layer is so thin you'll think it's clean, when it's not. All in all, a PITA. For what it's worth, I'd just take it to an auto-glass shop and for a few bucks, let them do it.

That's what I figured...So I called a couple places. The first hung up on me (accident? im not sure). The second told me they don't do it, and the 3rd was a dealer that told me the was a torx head, which there is not.
 


stick the small jewelers screw driver in there and tap up like that post says, thats how most are if you dont see the allen or torx head set screw.

if you can see the back of it through your window, from outside. you may see the two clips sticking down, not sure if yours is stuck to a black area or not on the glass.
 
Well, I got it off by firmly prying it away from the mount and tapping it back with a hammer. There is no spring loaded clip or set screw. I would not recommend that anyone else do it, unless they do not care if they crack their windshield. It was extremely nerve racking, and for all I know, I could have put some micro cracks in the glass under the mount.
 
thats how to do it really. how i get mine off, yeah its a bit scary but ive ripped off so many by the button and never had the glass break. not that it cant happen. ive seen pics.

now when you put it back on you wont want it down as far, ( thinking so i can get this off easier next time) but in a days time it will start to rock around, so you have to push it hard on the button. been there done that.
 
Ya, the one on my old car fell off and when I was pushing it back on, the glass cracked, so I just left it off until I got rid of the car. It may have been cracked before that and I just didnt notice, though. Hopefully I wont have to mess around with the new one after I install it, which by the way, will be a newer style mirror with Homelink from a Nissan. From what I understand, it is an easy swap.
