Re-wire 12vdc accessory socket

Goodday All, I have a 2001 Grand Prix GT V6 3800 Coupe. There is a 12 volt accessory outlet on the lower left side of the consol. How could I re-wire it so that power is only present while the vehicle is running? I am going to buy a Pyroil Interior Heater for the frosty winters here in Edmonton which would be plugged into that socket. So I would like the heater to get power only when I manually or remotely start the car. I have a Hyains manual, but it is lacking in current/accurate schematics. Any advise for a novice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Cliff
 


Well my Canadian friend... the way to do it would be to pop your console lid up and add a relay in there. Cut the orange wire going to the socket and connect it to pins 30 and 87. The add an ignition power to either pin 85 or 86 and put a constant ground to the other (85 or 86). This will only allow power to flow through the relay when the ignition is on.

And here I was going to just tap into the fuse box somehow. Glad I asked before arcing myself to the car. Would I need to add an inline fuse as there will be a heater attached? What would be the least evasive way to get ign pwr to terminal 86. Does my diagram come close?? Thanks again.

All these items in the car are already fused and that should be sufficient. Keep in mind the rating of that cig lighter is probably 10amp or 15amp at the most. Ignition power can be found in a lot of places. I think the large pink wire off the ignition switch (by base of column), radio, brown wire at HVAC and a few other places.
