Rattling Noise, Sounds Like a Diesel

I've been getting a rattling/grating noise during acceleration lately. I don't really know how to describe it other than it sounds vaguely reminiscant of a diesel engine from inside the car, though not as loud. Again, this is only heard occasionally and usually only when accelerating in low gear.

I don't know if this is a trans or motor issue, but it does have me worried because it's the same sound my 3.1 started making when the head gasket went bad - shortly before the car died completely. However that car had a delayed shift to second and I've noticed this car has started to do that as well.

I haven't had any other problems with it, other than it feeling a little underpowered when I first start it up some days. I've checked oil, trans fluid, and coolant and temperatures have not risen over 200. Will be doing a trans filter change soon.

Just for reference, it's completely stock except for an evap and EGR delete. I have a minor exhaust leak in the crossover pipe and I'm pretty sure the cat is bad. I have the forward O2 disconnected for now because it seems to run just a little better that way. Trying to get cash for a high flow cat and some headers.

Not that I've noticed. It only started this in the last week or two- now that I think of it that would be about a week after I disconnected the O2 :th_eyesrolling:. Still, the 3.1 never had anything disconnected and it started making that sound constantly just before it died.

It almost sounds like a chain rattling. Could this be a transmission issue?

is your check engine light on? any codes being thrown?
:o Yes, and lots- but that's because I deleted the evap and the EGR without tuning them out. I haven't noticed anything new, but getting codes checked is always a riot. I thought the guy at Autozone was going to have a heart attack.:p

well i can't say this is your issue but i had something similar happen to mine a few weeks ago. It was shifting hard, really didn't want to go over 2500rpm, and made a horrible noise kind of rattling, when i tried to force it. My cat was clogged up, at the time i didn't have the cash to replace so i just gutted the cat. All my problems went away.
