Radio Wire Harness

Hi all!

I joined this forum today just so I could ask this question. I've been searching the internet for a while and haven't found anything so hopefully you guys can help.

I am wanting to install a new head unit (pioneer) in my 2008 Grand Prix. I have steering wheel controls, but no OnStar or Monsoon system. I've been searching high and low for a wire harness adapter to keep the factory wire harness in tact. Most of what I find is about $80 worth of an adapter for OnStar, which I don't need! Buttt..... I have found a couple kits on eBay.

Both these kits have dash mounting kits and antenna adapters included.
One kit has a simple wire harness adapter that only supports the audio coming from the radio. No warning chimes, no OnStar, no BS. $20
The other kit has a simple wire harness adapter AND an interface for warning chimes. Again, no OnStar. $60

So my biggest question is, what warning chimes run through the radio? Just OnStar chimes or everything? Because if the chimes aren't a big deal, Ill go with the cheaper unit. But if "warning chimes" means door, seatbelt, CEL chimes, etc., then ill get the more expensive one (because I want those features).

Can anyone shed some light on this situation for me? Sorry for the long post, I just don't know what else to do! Any help is appreciated!
 


theres a adapter sold at crutchfields some one will pop in with the name and part #.

but the moonson deal there, you'll need to run new speaker wires and install all new speakers, forget the factory amp too. its best to just by pass all the old crap. the speakers are a different ohm, so when you hook up the new hu to them the sound is far from right.

I don't have the monsoon so that won't be an issue. I'm not doing new speakers either. Just want a new head unit for Bluetooth reasons.
 
oh, i miss read once again lol i suck.......

best buy should have a pig tail that fits into the factory radio plug, the wires on this plug are all labeled what they are for. makes hooking up a new hu easy. and saves the factory harness so you can go back to the stock radio if you ever wanted to.

Will the one from best buy still retain the OnStar and warning chimes, and cost me a fortune? Or will it just be like any normal radio harness? Because that's what im looking for. I don't need all the fancy interface connections.
 
the pug is just for the power and speaker wires.

you'll need that adapter to keep all the chimes and steering wheel controls. if i knew the part # id tell ya. t theres guys who know more on that part. ive just seen it linked a 100 times in the past.
 


no idea where they come from, i do know a lot of stuff stops working when the factory radio is removed. the adapter fixes that.
 
When I did my radio install last year in my GP 2008, I got the expensive harness as all warnings/chimp go through your speakers.
 


the harness required for the non Monsoon radio is the GMOS-01. You will also need another adapter for the steering wheel controls to function properly. Yes all chimes will be lost with cheap harness. Seat belts, door open key in ignition and all DIC warnings. SO if you want to keep the chimes then you will need the more expensive harness. On a side note you will lose the date function on the DIC, no way around it as the date is kept by the stock radio.

So no matter what harness I get, the date on the dash won't work?

Thinking about a Pioneer FHX720BT. I have also looked at comparable units from Kenwood and JVC. Any recommendations? I am shooting for a factory (or at least as factory as possible) look. Looking to stay under $150.

When the orginal CD unit went tits up on a 100F summer day. I upgraded to a Pioneer AVIC-D3 in 2007. Still going strong today, got us out of jams in large cities like DC, Philthydelphia, and Pittsburgh. Well worth the $550 unit cost and $200 adapters and install cost. Everything works except for the date display in the center display. Guess there was no way to hook it back up, as there is currently an empty plug that used the original's clock to keep track of the date.
