Radio Station-Clock window does not illuminate

02 GP GT

New member
The radio and CD in my 02 GP GT works like a champ as far as the sound goes. The problem is the window that tells me what station I have the radio on or what time it is does not illuminate. Can the display window be repaired or replaced or is it all part of the radio unit? Is this something the dealer has to replace or can I take the unit out and send it off to be repaired or replaced and reinstall it without knowing some secret code? Thanks in advance, Bill

Could be as simple as a blown bulb. Not sure how to get to it, but I'm pretty sure I've seen the method somewhere on one of the forum threads. Click the little magnifying glass at the top centre and search away.

There is a small bulb that backlights the display and they are known to go out. GM dealer has them. If you can't find it via search then I'll look when I get back from vacation tomorrow night as I've done it to my 00 GT before. Yes, you will have to take the radio apart but it's not hard.

Any assistance in helping me pull the radio out without busting up the dash will be greatly appreciated. Along with what I need to do to get the clock lit up again. Thanks

I am watching for advice on this too for my 02. I read the thread with pics for replacing the bulb in an 04+ but wondering how similar it would be.

dsmuts - what year is your radio from and how much if you are still selling? I'm in the Toledo area - thanks.

My 03 did this too...but I did not care since the radio/cd player still worked. I set my stations so I knew what stations were on each number button.

97-03 grab the dash surround piece. I find it's easiest to get my fingers in around the cluster or the pockets to the side of the wheel. Pull and the clips will release. Then unhook the fog light connector from the switch. now you can set that dash surround aside.

3 7mm screws hold the radio in.. unplug the antenna and connector(s).

Opening the radio.. looking at the radio face, unhook where the plastic pieces are hooked. one is bent up..bend that in..and unhook the rest.. wiggle gently and the face will pull out. change your bulb by turning counter clockwise to remove and clockwise to put back in.

Slide face back together, put back in dash after connecting and then push the surround back on after hooking up the fog connector.

Oh, and don't forget the two screws on the bottom of that piece. Remove those first. They are a small size but mine have a Phillips head as well. I actually made a video on how to remove the radio and take it apart, just didn't bother to edit and upload it.

Yeah I've been pretty busy lately, I don't think I could get it done before you'd want to fix your radio. Bill's description was pretty good, the whole thing after the screws really does just pull right off, there are metal clips holding it on. Everything with removing the radio is really self explanatory.
