Radiator Drain Plug Question/Options...

Primal

Hey All!

I'm wondering if there are any options for a better radiator drain plug than the stock one on my 2000 GTP. The one that came with the car is below. Obviously, it's designed for a 1/4 inch extension to turn it (it also appears to have a slot for an Allen Wrench a little deeper inside.) It was really hard to get out and you can see I chewed it up a little. I had to really yank on it with pliers to get it loose.

The stealership will only sell me a new radiator - they don't have a separate part number for the drain plug. But, I don't really want another one of these plugs anyway. Are there any options for a better plug like a petcock or something I can turn by hand?

I can probably reuse this one if I clean it up, but I'd rather use something a little more "routine maintenance friendly."

Thanks!

Adam

I did some searching on the forum here and I guess I should add that nothing was coming out when I turned it and it wouldn't slide out "just a bit" to let the coolant drain out the bottom. I turned it but it wouldn't slide out at all. Maybe some combination of it being stuck and me not knowing what the f#%k I was doing. :th_scratchhead:

Dorman makes a replacemet petcock. Check out part number 61133. Most of the folks on here tend to drain the radiator by removing the lower hose on the passenger side.

Yup.. as a CT guy, you should have been pulling the lower radiator hose.. cause that's how we do it in CT. hahahaha

Seriously though. The help section at your local parts stores should have something on the shelf. It's common to kill it when using it.

I must have missed that memo, Bill LMFAO!

Thanks a lot, guys. I'll use the lower hose from now on...

Found it! Looks like the right one from here. Sweet that it's got the tabs instead of the socket thingy on it.

Thanks again!

Found the Dorman ones on amazon. Also, amazon has the AC Delco part. So there ARE stock ones available without having to buy the whole radiator...

The part is AC Delco 52484010

Just wanted to make this thread as complete as possible for anyone who needs the info later...
