Hey out there,
Need help figuring out R&P steering difficulties. Used 98 GTP(w/Magnasteer) with 154K miles. Using Autotap unit for scanning.
No codes yet or TCS, ABS lights. Visually inspected Magnasteer harness--appears OK. Pump, hoses and R&P bellows are dry as a bone--no leaks.
Pwr steering pump is not making any noise and is full of fluid.
Effort required to turn steering wheel goes in and out and is not a function of RPM, temp, braking, or other factors that might have an impact on steering input required.
Don't feel safe driving at any speed. Effort required for right/left steering is hit or miss.
I have been reading that the VSS provides input to the computer to vary the signal to the magnets in the steering unit.
Other than a visual inspection of the speed sensor itself, are there any diagnostic procedures to figure out if this is a sensor output problem or an issue with the R&P itself???
Wasn't there a recall on Magnasteer units a few years back?
Thanks for any help.
