the dimmer and illumination wire get wired together from the radio get and hooked to the dimmer wire for from the stock harness.. correct?

also ive heard this can short certain things out if done.. sounds stupid so im asking before i do it
 


No.

Illumination is used to tell the radio when the headlights are on in order for it to automatically dim.
Dimmer is used to tell the radio how bright the interior lights are .....if it has it. Typically aftermarkets dont.
