Quick Q: Torque Converter

Are the torque convertors between a 98 GTP and a 03 SSEi interchangeable? I would think they would be. I have a rebuilt stock convertor for my SSEi that someone with a 98 GTP wants to buy. I want to make sure they will not run into any problems with it.

Thanks

they might be a different diameter size. also, not 100%, but the flywheel bolt pattern may differ slightly. .... lol i guess im not much help, eh? essentially you need to know the size of the one being replaced to start.... though if trannyman pops in, i bet he knows this stuff with his eyes closed

They will be the same sized torque converter but likely a different stall code. The prix will have a JTFM code converter and the bonnie converter for 03 should be a JZFM or possibly a JSFM. They will interchange but the stall may be a little lower.

what applications does the FLBH code torque converter run with? I just purchased a transmission for my grand prix , the guy says it was rebuilt and was in his 2001 grand prix gtp, the torque converter was a smaller diameter when matched to my flexplate. is this a bad sign that the transmission is not a 4t65e-hd?

If it was rebuilt the torque converter may have been replaced. ZZP's torque converter has the L36 (non-HD trans) pattern to it.

i just need to find out what applications use FLBH as the code ( for the torque converter )

Are you sure it isnt an FLHB rather than FLBH? The FLHB converters are very common in a lot of non SC fwd transmissions such as the GP GT, non SC powered 3800s, and also 3400 powered cars.

yeah thats the one, is it possible that it was or could be used for the 3.8 SC? or did i get a transmission that will not work for my application? i just dont want to stuff this thing only to have it blow on me or not work at all

You could use that converter but will require drilling your flexplate for new holes/ elongating the existing holes / or getting a different flexplate to work with the smaller converter as the bolt circle is slightly smaller. My preferrence is to use stock SC converters in M90 cars. The converter is slightly larger which also gives you a larger lockup clutch disc and is more reliable with the added power and also has a great stall speed out of the box and will be more efficient on the top end. You can use whichever you want and either will work just fine and I just wanted to throw in my .02

interesting. when i had the trans swapped out of my 99 GS, the new converter had the smaller diameter bolt circle for the flexplate, but the actual outside size of the converter was the same. elongated the holes in the flexplate and bolted her up... good to go

i think your missing what im asking.... the FLHB did not bolt to my flexplate , so i ordered a JTFM torque converter.

my question was because the transmission came with a FLHB TC does that mean my transmission is not a 4t65e-hd , my application a is a 3.8 SC. i dont want the trans to blow because it was built for the incorrect application

thank you

What does the ID tag on the back of the trans have on it? There will be a larger number, the last digit of the model year of the trans, followed by two letters, XA or XB for a W-body SC HD trans.

There should be a metal tag on the trans unless the shop took it off which means that you will not know what the trans really is out of or for unless it was original to your car.

there is a tag, not too much is stamped on it though just a few numbers not many though

The original tag is about 3.5" x 2" and is white or pink in color with black lettering. A Goodwrench reman trans will not have this tag and on the top of the lower part of the case will be a small tag glued on that is normally green in color and about 1.5" wide x 1" tall. This small tag will still have the proper ID code which will be a number and two letters followed by some other numbers.

the tag i have on the rear only has 3 lines of info they are as follows

1st line: 264
2nd line: 1A
3rd line: 01

thats all i have as far as coding does this help lol ?

Those numbers dont do any good. If it is the correct sized tag where a stock ID tag is and is plain silver in color then likely when they washed the case in a spray cabinet the information was washed away with it and those numbers you gave were likely stamped into one side of the tag but dont serve of much use, sorry

the guy said the tranny was from a 2001 gtp, my concern is only the torque converter that it came with ( FLHB) is it possible that they used that TC with the 4t65e-hd?
