Question on GTP

Ello all!

I'm new to the group and have a few questions on the Grand Prix GTP.

I'm turing 17 soon and I'd like to buy a GTP, I dont know alot about these cars so:

1) What are some things too look for when buying one; major problems, etc.

2) What year is the best for a $6300 price range.

3) Are these cars fast? I know thay have a supercharger but, they are front wheel drive.

4) What are some top competiors for this car, in case is doesn't workout. I can buy something similar.

What I do know:
3.8 L V6 supercharger ~260 horse
They made alot of them
Nice interior: leather, HUD
Good first car?
Some people I know have thase cars already, so i know the inside is nice and there sre some cool features. This will be my first car and i want it to be nice, fast, easily upgradeable, and realiable.

Thanks!

Check for rust under the car, inside the fenders, around the gas-cap, and in the rear strut tower areas (have to pull the carpet out of the way)
Check to see if the lower intake manifold has been replaced with the aluminum ones (if the Grand Prix is 2003 or older)
Beat the piss out of it test driving it and make sure everything feels good, and the transmission is solid.

For $6300, you can afford anything from 97-07, except for a nice condition GXP (5.3L v8)

Best bet would to be to decide between the 97-03 body style, or the 04-08 Bodystyle and go from there. Obviously the newer the car, the better shape it SHOULD be in. But there are always exceptions to the rule.

You can get a good 97-03 for under $4000, and have money left over to repair anything it needs, and put a few mods into it. That's what I did.

Or if Blue hasn't sold his yet, buy that sexy thing.

Hi!
Thanks for the quick response.

I have to say I like the 04-08 body style better, so that will be what i'm looking at.
Good advice on checking for rust, and will make sure it runs well. lol
I also recently found out that they have HUD and paddle shifters... kinda cool. Was HUD an option, aswell as remote start?

I've found a local 2005 GTP a little under my price range and the rest ill just throw at it to fix it up and what not.

everything is options.

Paddle shifters are stupid and are a good way to break stuff on a FWD sedan.

260hp crank, so maybe 210 at the front wheels.

common wear items are LIM gasekts, ti rods, wheel bearings, plugs, wires, trans fluid etc etc.

They are quick cars for there size and the class they are in. The motor is hands down better than a 3.4, 3.5 and 3.9 that could come in a 04+ impala, monte carlo, malibu.

there is a buyers guide for a GP on here. Has everything you are wanting to know.

2) What year is the best for a $6300 price range.
You could find a clean well maintained 97-03 or a "high mileage 04+

3) Are these cars fast? I know thay have a supercharger but, they are front wheel drive.
No, but with some mods you can make them quicker. But fast they are not, don't expect to beat modern cars in stock form.

Regal
impala
monte carlo

Are all w bodies, but with your price range you shouldn't have any problem finding a GP

nice and easily upgradable and a great first car. Fast you are going to have to put fourth some effort depending on what your definition is. Around here anything slower than 10 seconds in the 1/4 mile is slow.

GP's are great first cars. The GTP is pretty quick and from what I understand you can only get the paddle shifters on the comp G model and gxp's. Its overrated. if you find a nice gtp with out shifters jump on it. I hardly ever use mine and they are transmission killers.

Thats alot of info! haha, thank you for all the input.

I will deffinitly check out those common wear items, and since they made soo many of these it can't be too expensive if something goods wrong.
Paddle shifters are nice, (And i want them :th_biggrin2:) but i wouldn't plan on making hard shifts or anything.
Same with the HUD a nice plus.
I dont expect these things to be blazing, i just like the supercharged GTP because i see alot of GT at my school. So a new, Supercharged version will help make me special. LOL
And most certainly i will check out that buyers guide, I bet theres tons of info.

What are all the models from 2004? From bottom to top, like GT,GTP,GTP comp g???

Thank you evrybody for all the input it helps alot when buying a new car (or atleast new to me ) for the first time.

All the info you are looking for is on
this site. Use the search function and your questions will be answered in regards to the options and everything else

the transmissions are already a weak point, and adding erratic upshifts/downshifts only makes things worse...

While I see how this could be on the gxp with their fragile as glass transmission, I don't see how paddles on a regular gtp could be any worse than beating on the car and letting it decide when to shift.
