question about stearing

i had a problem with my front wheels... my tires are balding on the inside and outside but NOT in the middle, i do not do burnouts, pretty much ever, and the tires are only a year old, they are nankangs summer only tires and i only use them april- november. inflation was fine, so i brought it to a tire shop thinking i needed an alignment and maybe a bearing since it pulled to the right. and they told me my rack and pinion is shot? someone tell me how this happens, and if they are being honest or just trying to get money out of me!

check your inner and outer tie rods as well, get a friend to crank on the wheel left and right with the car off, and wheel un locked, watch all the moving parts connections for play, they should move as one but if a tie rod is shot there will be play.

it may just need inner tie rods witch is why the shop just wants to swap the rack out.

i just did my rack and it took 4 hours to complete, but only cost me 75 bucks for a used one.
im sure the shop wants over 500 to do it with a reman rack installed. or more with a new rack.

thats funny, because it did need an inner tie rod, and now they said they cant align my front end because my front struts are shot.... any advice?

buy new struts and put them in, after you take off the rim, its like 3 bolts up top and 2 off the steering knuckle.

inner tie rod you can do your self too, you just need to rent a inner tie rod removal tool. you will need alignment after that for sure, so if you are going to do this, do it all in one day and drop it off for an alignment asap.

and get a new set of front tires before the alignment too, new or good set of used tires will do.
