question about car dying

I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT. I have had a problem for some time. While driving the car the tachometer will drop to zero and stop working. Sometimes this causes a shutter and other times the car will die completely. Most of the time the car will start right back up, other times it will take several minutes to start. On one instance where it took awhile to start, it back fired. I don't know if this is a spark plug issue, a ignition coil issue, a fuel system issue or what. If anyone has had this same problem I would greatly appreciate knowing what you did to fix it.

Thank you. I looked and the sensor seams pretty cheap and the fix is some what simple. I will try this and see what happens. Is there anything else that could also be causing this problem along with the sensor that you know of?
