Question About Brakes

Ok so I had an incident that made me realize that I need better brakes and my question is if I switch to better pads and slotted rottors would this imporve braking? Or am I forced to switch to 12" for better braking?

Better pads will always make braking better, the rotors not so much. Also look at braided lines and new fluid, that will make a big difference to.

Braided brake lines are THE WORST bang for your buck in a brake setup, not to mention a lot of people run into these lines breaking.

Cheapest (best bang for you buck) is to upgrade the caliper bracket (monte carlo, impalas,) which allows you to run 12" rotors and your stock calipers. This gives your calipers better leverage to slow you down as well as handle more heat to prevent the rotor from being warped.

I'm not certain on the exact year that these came stock on as I upgraded straight to the c5 vette brake setup.

You can buy the set new here, or email EDMORAD for a kit and he'll set you up cheap if he has a used car in his yard. You can usually get this kit used for around $50 and then a set of rotors for around $90 or so.

just do the stock GM 11.9" upgrade. it helps out a lot. get some nice pads with it and youre set.

Ok thanks now I've got a few more questions:
1. I think I know the answer to this one but I just wanna hear what you guys think; should I do the rear at the same time or can I do it later?
2. Is this hard to do? Beacause I'm not mechanicly inclined and I really can't afford to go to a shop to have them install them.

It's pretty straight forward, just unbolt the caliper, slip in new pads, and put the caliper back on. There's a little more to it than that but that's the basic idea.

GM Parts Direct: Your direct source for Genuine GM Parts

For about $300 I would step up to the F-Body Brakes, for less than the "upgrade" listed at GMPartsDirect!

Get the left and right calipers with brackets, pads, and all hardware for $100 each:

Then rotors for $35 each:

Take the brackets to a machine shop and have them tapped to M14x2.0, this cost about $20-$30 for two. Just about $300 for a whole new front brake setup that will stop much better than stock.
