pulling apart

Hello everyone. 02 grand prix, sounds like spun bearing noise in park and neutral. Goes
away when you put it in gear but does not move, does not move in reverse either.
Took passenger side of tranny off pulled out final drive gear assembly. And took a few other things
out. One question is. The aluminum housing I took off, there is metal stuck around the
vss. Where the seal is, right behind that I believes there is suppose to be a bushing
there. I need to know if one is suppose to be there, also I don't think that would
be the reason it won't go in gear

The drive chain is on the driver side under valve body.
Do you think it would make noise in all gears? Just trying to
get a good understanding. I took off the passenger side housing

If you have metal sticking to the VSS that is in the passenger side diff housing you have a much larger failure inside of the transmission. You have a bearing that has failed in the transmission. You'll be needing a rebuild my friend.

Because of your description that the noise goes away while the car is in D or in Reverse those are the only times that the drive chain is not moving. That would lead me to believe that the stator support bearing or the driven sprocket support bearing has failed. When either one of them goes they usually take out a lot of other things. A full rebuild is in your very near future.

Just go to the local junk yard around 250 for another trans unless you want to spend to have it rebuild.

Well thanks for all the insight. I am thinking of a rebuildnot sure yet. I am gonna post a few photos of what I got done so far.

Does any one notice the bright aluminum mark. It is on all of you
the inner bolt holes. Meaning bolts go in the housing from the outside. Almost
like slapping up against them. Any suggestions on that issue.
Also where can I buy a housing ready to install

I see where you are taking about with where it looks to be rubbing. Have you inspected the differential itself yet? Checked to see if the tolerance is within spec? Reluctor wheel on the diff hasn't walked it's way toward the passenger side a bit?

I wouldn't worry about that little damage to the housing.....no need for going out and buying a replacement.

Long story short, if you car isn't moving in when you put in driver or reverse there is a much larger issue going on in the trans....even with taking off and inspecting the diff there is not much you're going to be able to do without digging into it further. The transmission is going to need a full rebuild. A JY trans is typically the cheapest option at this point unless you rebuilt it yourself.

I got ya. But what I am wondering also, is, in the bore of the housing
should there be a bearing or bushing there. It looked to be rubbing inside
of the bore and found a long strip of metal about 2 and a half inches long
maybe sixteenth wide. Stuck it to magnet and it stuck. So I'm sure its not aluminum.

Take a look at the trans/info post I posted. There are pictures of the assembly and that will tell you if something is missing. Either the selective washer and bearing are on the diff or they are missing. That won't stop you from going into gear. And the amount of shavings on the VSS are 100% completely normal. When you wipe it..there will be a fine paste. If you have chunks, that's bad.

I'm in agreement, it sounds like something broke on the input side of things. Maybe an input shaft, TC or chain.

I can't find your post would like to see it
