Pull engine, trans or both

Hey out there,
98 GTP with 155k miles.
Got a bad trans and need to pull and repair/replace.
Don't have a lift to raise car.
At the same time, I am going to do other maintenance.
LIM, waterpump, valve cover gaskets, PS pump, rack and pinion, sway bar, front hubs etc., the usual stuff.
Should I pull engine/trans together or leave the engine in the car and do repairs to the engine in the car???
The opinions on top vs. drop the subframe engine/trans removal is not clear to me. Please advise.
On another subject.
Car has SLP headers, roller rockers--I assume a cam--reprogrammed ECM.
I bought the car used(original owner twice removed--not sure about ALL mods)
What is the easiest way to get the car back closer to STOCK? Getting the ECM reprogrammed? Not really going to be pushing this car to the limit. Just want a reliable daily driver.
Thanks for your help.

Pull both the motor and trans.

If you have rockers anything above 1.7s you should not have a cam.

If you want to go back to stock, your best bet would be getting a stock unmolested motor and trans and starting over fresh.

So let me get this right all you need to do is waterpump, LIM gaskets, valve covers would be cake once you get all the crap off to do the LIM gaskets. Rack can be done not even touching the subframe bolts. PS pump is 2 bolts and lines, PS pump has to come off to do a water pump so your half way their doing the water pump lol!
IMO I wouldnt even think of taking the engine out or trans or dropping the subframe unless your doing

A. Cam (yes it can be done in the car blah blah chances are your doing more than just the cam if your on that path)
B. Engine swap
C. Trans work

Leave everything would be my route esp if you have limited tools and no lift!

He said he has to take the tranny out, its bad. I would not reprogram the PCM if it has performance mods, the tune is there so your car can handle those modifications. And yes either get a new L67 motor (they are pretty cheap) or you can look at the rockers and see if they are not stock. Chances are you dont have a cam and rockers, although it is possible.

I don't really see a reason to pull the engine. Look up any writeup I've done on trans swapping. You jack it up, then go from there. Overall it would be much easier to do this as a trans, then some misc work.

Here's where we get into the part where it goes back into the air. If you are draining coolant and oil anyhow. The engine is a few hoses and electrical connectors from coming out with the trans through the top.

Thanks guys.
I know they are NON STOCK rockers on the engine. I just don't know what the ratio is.
The engine is in good running shape--I don't need to change it out.
Just going to do regular maintenance since it will be down for awhile.
This is my second GTP. Done the usual R&R on my earlier GTP.
Front hubs, LIM, rack and pinion, sway bar and power steering pump.
This will be my first waterpump.
Just thought it would be easier to do alot of that engine work out of the car.
Still didn't get a consensus vote on top vs subframe trans removal.
Wouldn't it be easier to do all of the engine maintenance with it out of the car. Have to weigh my options when it comes to extra time required to do the engine work with it still in the car vs with it out of the car.
This is not my primary vehicle so I'm not in a rush to get it done.
If I can knock it out over 2-3 weekends I'd be happy.
Thanks.

Do you plan on replacing the engine and trans. mounts as well? How about the radiator?

Personally I would pull them both then do what you need to do. I wish when I had pulled mine out that I had done the rack and swaybar at the same time. No laying on the ground, no fighting to get to bolts/lines. Would have just been stand in the engine bay and remove all that junk and replace. No problem. Just unbolt the A/C compressor and lay everything out of the way so you don't have to break open the system.

And yes, I did my rack and new front sway w/o dropping the subframe much, but still would have been easier with literally nothing in the way. Did the water pump and PS pump in-car as well. Def. would have been easier w/o the strut tower and whatnot in the way.

Besides, its not like its your DD, so you could take your time, replace everything you need to and be sure that its 100% ready to go before dropping it back in.

Just my .02

I'm in the same boat. Especially since you won't be rushed. yank both. That way you can clean the engine bay and subframe at the same time.

Pulling the Mc off the booster adn layingit on the strut tower will help gain room.

You want an engine lever as well. Set it up to lift the passenger side a bit more from the start wtih the chains and then once you are lifting.. it's a slow back and forth of lift an inch and put the nose of the engine in the air an inch.
