pros and cons of screen removal?

porting tb, supercharger, and lim and dont know if i need the screen anymore. anyone got any opinions? and yes i have hp tuners so tuning isnt a concern
 


Thats not the cool thing to do anymore, the new thing the kids are trying these days is to run a screened tb only and no form of intake whatsoever.

Say what?!

Like a filterless intake? What the hell. Screen or not...it isn't going to make that much of a difference anyways.
 
The screen is just there to make the air less turbulent and get a better MAF reading. If you have a smooth walled CAI then you really don't need it.
 


i run the northstar with 4inch maf setup...my maf has a screen built into it. when i ran the stage 2 zzp tb i had no screen i didnt feel a difference
 
The screen is there to direct the air over the maf in a consistent manner. By doing this the engineers relied upon the reading for fueling etc.

The results and issues vary by car.
The good, Slightly less restriction
The bad, inconsisistent readings that can allow the maf to believe less air is flowing, causing it to fuel less...create a lean condition and worst case scenariio "BOOM"

My take on it. Run a screen, stay safe.
 
wouldnt it trigger a ses light if the maf isnt reading correctly with the screen off? cause when i bought my gtp it didnt have a screen and ive never had a problem. runs real strong.

Do you just feel that it runs "real strong" or do you have scans to validate that?

Even if your maf failed there is almost always no SES light.

The maf screen helps to disperse air evenly before coming in contact with the maf sensor. This gives a fairly accurate reading but when the screen is removed, you lose maybe 1-5% accuracy, if that, hell it may be even less than 1%, no real way of determining the exact amount... This can play with the maf readings and may run a little leaner/richer when you hit different parts of the maf range. Some people take it off, some people leave it on, but it certainly has a purpose on the car...
 


The purpose of the maf screen is for laminar air flow over the hot wire. The stock intakes are designed to be quiet, not to provide good laminar air flow and least amount of restriction. They put the screen in there to fix that problem. If you have an aftermarket intake with few to no bends, wont matter anyways, because the incoming air isnt very turbulent to begin with.
 
Considering these cars rely almost entirely on the MAF for fueling and that the screen poses nearly no restriction in airflow, why not just leave it on. Tuning is easier when I've had a screen in front of the MAF than when there hasn't been one. Without the screen, I'm always doing scans and noticing that the MAF table is off one way or the other after just dialing it in. With a screen in place, I can do a scan and see extremely little or no errors to the MAF table after dialing it in. So, from what I've learned, the screen definitely helps with consistency.
