Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Trying to chill out

wow, not a bad time line, from look i got a truck with a 6.0, and not even knowing what you wanted it in. to tadaaaa. the s-10 on the road doing burn outs and passed inspection too.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Trying to chill out

I was highly motivated. :th_biggrin2:

So I picked up these gems late yesterday.

Factory ZQ8's. Got them off a guy I met at the junkyard. The sound of my truck caught his attention and we started talking. These are the S10 equivalent of the Grand Prix's "Pre Gens." They're in great shape. One has a fair bit of corrosion on the inside lips, but that's the worst of it. Only got three, but I felt the price was good enough to jump on. Searching for number four. Worse case scenario I could get a repro from RockAuto but I'd rather find a used one to match the condition of the trio. You guys keep a look out for me?

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Trying to chill out

Buddy here at work had those wheels on his S-10 when he traded it in for his new Canyon. I'll keep an eye out for some.

That ebay add also lists other trucks/codes that this wheel came from. I'm sure you already know this but maybe it'll help the search.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the extra eyes!

How much are we talking? comparable to TEP?

Each build is unique, but typically significantly less.

Well the AC works. Mostly, I guess. It blows cold. Not like freeze your fingers cold, but cold. Maybe because it was just idling in the driveway, and it's like 95° out. Filled it with 152a just to make sure the compressor would kick on and to check for any potential leaks. I may go back and fill it with 134a or I may not.

Also pretty sure either my battery or alternator took a dump. When I went to restart the truck after all the dorking around with the AC, it just clicked. Threw it on the charger for a couple minutes, and it begrudgingly started. Couple trips around the block and the volt gauge held steady at around 10. Ordered a 145 amp for a Escalade. Should have it by Friday. Even if I do have to replace the battery, I won't feel too bad. It's over two years old, and out here, we usually only get three out of them anyway.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Blowing cold air!

New alternator is in. I can confirm; longer belt is needed. I put the original one (from before the power steering pulley swap) on for now. That will serve as a band aid, but that's a little too long. 2329mm should be just right.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Blowing cold air!

Got a rear sway bar. Not really high on the priority list, so it might be a while before it goes on, but for the price I couldn't pass it up.

Like this thread. Takin' time and lookin' right.

Looks well worth it to vaporize rubber. :th_biggrin2:

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Blowing cold air!

Thanks man. Burnouts was the #1 reason I built this.

Well shoot. Hopped in the truck to make a Wal-Mart run for Memorial day supplies and noticed a puddle of oil under the left rear tire. A quick whiff determined it was gear oil. Backed the truck in and pulled the wheel off...

Having the drain hole was a definite bonus.

And here's how it'll sit till tomorrow. Really hoping the bearing didn't fail and chew into the axle causing the seal failure. Didn't feel any movement when it tried to wiggle it.

That really sucks, hope its nothing too serious. didn't you go through the axle? Its possible it was just a bad seal to begin with..

I did. Shortened the housing, re-drilled both axles for the different lug pattern, new bearing and seal on the left side. And I think that's where my problem stems from... I was really happy to see the axle wasn't hurt.

But that's where the good news stopped.

Looks like the bearing race broke. I must have cracked it while driving it in. Had to cut the old one out since the front lip was gone. I'll be "renting" the bearing driver when I install the replacement. About a $35 fix total for the seal, bearing and new fluid. It's not all bad though. Gave me a chance to inspect the gears and change the fluid.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Blowing cold air!

That was a close one... Lol

That gear oil looks a bit dark for only being a few months old.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - All my gauges work!

It's sure a good thing you caught that. Man what a puny race. Easy on the new one, Hoss.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - All my gauges work!

Just a thought... It's more likely that bearing was dropped before you got it, than that you goofed the install. IMO. Are you like me and have to unwrap and feel any bearing you are about to walk out with? Or did you get that part shipped in?

Could have been a lot worse. There's never a "good" time for a vehicle to break, but a long holiday weekend with no family plans is about as good as it gets. Bonus points to the truck for showing symptoms in the garage and not somewhere far from home.

It's not great, that's for sure. I think some of the discoloration might be leftovers from before. In spite of me toilet brushing the tubes and pumpkin, there was still some crust in there. The whole housing was caked when I originally opened it up. Oh, and that silver stuff in the bottom of the pan... That's just the gears "mating" :th_laugh-lol2:

I used a driver. Just like a pro! :th_hammerhead2:

I guess that's possible too, but less likely. I think the old hammer and socket install killed it. Learn from me guys, rent the tool!

That bearing was shipped, new bearing was over the counter. I still had trouble with the new bearing too though. After I drove it in (perfectly straight and square) half the needles fell out of the cage. Took a step back to cool down and figured I could manually snap each roller back into the cage. I had to re-assemble the bearing after it was installed. Sigh.

It's all back together now though. On to the next thing. Or wait long enough and some new issue will pop up...

Got my fleet runner belt today.

Looks like 2328mm is the exact right length for a GEN3 motor with truck accessories, smaller PS pulley and 145 amp alt.
