Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Making S10's great again!

Well I finally broke down and dug out the work light. Bought me some extra time. I'm happy with what I got done. I'd still be out there if I didn't need more material. Going to the metal supply yard tomorrow to get some 1/8" plate.

Preliminary mock up

I was satisfied so I burned it in. Be nice. It's been a LONG time since I did any MIG welding

Trimmed up the excess on the front and burned that in as well

After just this little bit of work, I'm convinced this notch will be just as strong or stronger than the factory hollow frame rail. Keep in mind, I'm not even close to done yet.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - It fits!

Beautiful. Seriously. Plate it shut and pop wheelies ASAP! How long of a bead do you think you'll be running at one zap? Being a sheetmetal guy, I'd be scared to weld like a whole seam at once.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - It fits!

Looks pro compared to the last welding job I did.

Ha! Well, I have had some experience, but like I said.. I'ts been a long time.

Thanks man! I've come to the conclusion that you don't need to be a great welder if you're good with a grinder. All those years of spotting dies is starting to pay off!

I'm thinking once it's all rough tacked together I'll run 1" stitches. Jumping around and running tip to tail as I go.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Making S10's great again!

On thick metal I just run a straight bead, mainly because I don't worry about metal warp.

Do however you wish really when dealing with frame thick metal like this.

I'd probably be okay just running one long bead, but I like to play it safe. The start/stop is good practice for me. Plus, you'd be surprised how NOT thick that frame material is. It's just barely over 1/8". I'm guessing 10 gauge.

Here's this morning's work. My plan was to get the top profile dialed in, shoot a "floor" across the opening to tie the two sides together, then finish the box vertically.

Now with some lunch in my belly, I can go after it again!

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - It fits! (Kind of)

Nice! :th_popcorn:

Thank you sir! I said it would look good when I was done and I'm really trying.

My afternoon accomplishment. Still need to fine tune it

Didn't get very far because I had to run and grab this thing

I got a builder core 80e for $250. I'll probably rebuild once the S10 is up and going. Be nice to have a spare. And just for fun, here's the "negative" of my frame fill in.

Oh, and the '84 sprung a gas leak on the way home so I need to fix that tomorrow.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Making S10's great again!

Finally done. Sorry for the crappy pictures.

Took way longer than I thought it would. I also think I took more than I needed to, but it is what it is at this point.

The back side burn

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Making S10's great again!

Pressure washed all the grinding grit out of the engine bay so I could drop the motor in for (what I thought would be) the last time. Unfortunately, it'll have to come out at least once more. The LH8 oil pan crushes the ABS/Airbag sensor harness in the original location on the back side of the cross member. There's plenty of room on top of the cross member though.

I did get to check my frame to compressor clearance. Even with the motor fully pitched forward, there's still plenty of room.

Probably took more than really needed, but I suppose that's better than the alternative.

I'm really happy with how the side clearance looks though.

I was also able to snake the right header in after the motor was in it's mounts, so that was nice. Overall, I'm surprised how much room there is.

..............................I think a V8 S10 is in my future

Ha! Stay tuned for the conclusion of this project to see if it's even worth the effort. :th_laugh-lol2:

Between IDJ's pics and this build, I'm running low on

. :p

LOL! I share because I enjoy the feedback. Kinda fun telling the story as it happens. Also cool to go back to the beginning to see how this whole mess got started.

I like the top view too, Brandon. Thats the one that counts. WTG!

Know what you mean about being able to reflect on a project at a glance with a thread. It is fun to have an interesting project to discuss / share. Keeps a guy honest and provides conversational fodder for like minded individuals. My week has been so action packed that I'm behind in updates again. Whew.

Let's go buddy! Ha!

Well, the engine is out again and the harness is moved. Did a little more playing around with the oil cooler adapter. Looks like it won't work with the lines coming out the bottom. They hard hit the down pipe that way. I can run it with the lines coming out the top, but I will have to delete the block heater altogether.

Not a big deal, as I didn't plan on using it, but I wasn't able to find that big block plug by itself. Now I'm on the hunt for a GM part number. I refuse to pay $20 to Summit and another $10 in shipping for a "Plug Kit." I just need a single factory replacement plug.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Making S10's great again!

You're gonna miss that block heater...

But there's no stopping now. Lol

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Making S10's great again!

Even the desert can get cold... And block heaters are always a good idea, helps with almost everything. Fuel efficiency, wear on internals, interior comfort for those few cold mornings...

And turbos make everything better.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Making S10's great again!

he lives in Arizona, hes never gonna need it lol

Not just Arizona. Southern Arizona. I'm closer to Nogales than Phoenix. The AC is still running in the house as of October 27th.

and i hear i've sponsored a turbo for this project.

Probably... But I keep thinking how nice it would be to have a tow dolly.

I have a garage. It really never even gets below freezing.

And turbos make everything better.

I have no argument. ;)
