Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - It fits!

nice work, have welder and it will fit, one way or another. :D

Exactly. Even if I have to fill the whole thing with weld, it will be solid and look... not bad?

oh, and dented headers dont hurt HP at all, they can add some lol theres a vid on line, hammer blows to sledge blows to all the pipes. nothing hurt the hp

I've seen that. Love engine masters. I remember years ago when I had to dent headers to make them fit, I'd cringe with every swing. With these I was like "needs more... little more... one more time" The fact the their cheap Chinese headers makes it even easier. Add to that, their only temporary. I'll go back to manifolds or turbo headers when it gets a turbo.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - It fits!

Im loving what is happening here... I have a special love for LS swap anything.

Thanks! I'm bringing all you guys with me (in spirit) when I go shred tires!

I have only 1 question... why the smaller pulley for the PS pump? lol

The giant wagon wheel size pulley hits the S10 steering box. Smaller pulley is the cheapest solution.

Re: Project LQ4 - Poor white S10

Wicked amount of progress!

You got a plan in your head about how to box that cutout back in?

I wonder if the idler would allow re-clocking the position a few degrees.

The kit seems spiff if thats all you had to do at the back.

Crap man that thing is gonna crank hard on the truck! Badass.

Wicked amount of progress!

Thanks! Got an early start due to the community yard sale. Had to be out early. It was going really well too. Right up until the idler arm snag.

You got a plan in your head about how to box that cutout back in?

Kind of? I think it's one of those things that just comes together as you're doing it. I'm sure you've had jobs like that. No real plan. It just kind of happens. The whole time I was hacking on that I was thinking to myself, "I wonder how IDJ would fix this mess"

I wonder if the idler would allow re-clocking the position a few degrees.

Pfft. That would have been a great question to ask yesterday! Lol

The kit seems spiff if thats all you had to do at the back.

I was stoked. I guess those mounts actually move the motor forward a little. Hence the compressor/idler interference. All the other installs I've seen have the clearance box well behind the idler. Six of one, half dozen of another I guess.

Crap man that thing is gonna crank hard on the truck! Badass.

I can't wait to drive it!

Re: Project LQ4 - Poor white S10

It's not too late to try the idler arm thing. Another option might be a bent or pie cut then welded idler shaft on a relocated upper bolt.

Guys who splice frames by the book say if you cut a five inch tall frame, the reinforcing panels added should be twenty inches long. 4:1.

Keeping that in mind and knowing this isn't a splice, and that it's well out past the torque box area you can back that off some.

Knowing that the steering linkage is anchored there, and that a weak spot there could add disaster in the case of collision, we gotta go strong.

It sure didn't end up like we imagined earlier.

My only thought is to create a stiff vertical wall right where the rail halves meet. One that is longer than the cutout and has to be finagled into place by inserting it one end first then pushing it past the cutout enough to get the whole thing in there. That would box the outer half of the rail into just a skinny version of itself at the cutout area. Once that was welded in (I'd rather attach with flanges and plug welds than beads on a perpendicular butt joint), then you could close in the inner rail half as you see fit, in an aesthetically pleasing manner. A reinforcement would be hidden inside the rail that way.

Adding a thick plate to the outer side, on the outside, might be overkill but I think I'd like one. Imagine barely getting hit by someone running a red light, the kind of hit that lays rails to one side. Or centering a pole when you lift from a burnout and the truck goes ape fishtailing.

Sure, a cosmetic unreinforced thing here might hold up fine during hard usage but never forget to remember planning for wrecks, or that you're taking flexibility away and adding brittleness. A reinforced fix makes sense because take a close look at the steering box side... frame is hard as a rock there, wreck-wise. Having that kinda stiffness on the idler side might actually be an improvement over stock, but with the cutout so close to the idler mount, the reinforced fix may only equal the idler-holding-still ability of stock.

Absorb or dismiss the input, it's just thoughts. I enjoy helping folks think through all the relevant factors and feel more comfortable about their decisions. But I really enjoy bringing up things not thought of yet. There's a piece of nice thick wide bar stock in my work stall... about what you need to proceed. That welder is screaming your name and pleading with you to take it for a spin, but shut that out until you nail down the frame patch plan and it makes sense.

THEN blaze it!

I know. It went sideways pretty quick. It's easy to get carried away knowing you have a welder dying for some attention. You made a lot of good points. I'll take it all into consideration and use what I can. I promise, when I'm done it will be strong.

One more thing... CAD. Cardboard-aided-design. That is all.;)

Best suggestion ever. We used to do this all the time when building scrap chutes for dies. As someone who used multiple CAD programs, I love that acronym!

In other news, I sold the "bad" motor for $200. Puts the cost of the truck down to $800.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - It fits!

Made it to Harbor Freight today. Apparently they were having their sidewalk sale. Place was a zoo. On the bright side, my normally $45 welding cart was on sale for $33.

Not a bad little cart for the price. My welder fits, so that's a plus.

We'll see how long it lasts.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - It fits!

so far over a year on my friends, and we roll it around all the time, like cause its in the way again, its solid cart for sure.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - It fits!

Nice progress man. Thanks for the help over the weekend. So this is what I found when I took the heads off my lq4.

Thanks! Also, happy to help wherever I can.

So this is what I found when I took the heads off my lq4.

Didn't want to do a full rebuilt, but may have to.

Ouch! That's ugly. I wonder if you could get away with just dropping a new/used slug in there. These motors seem to be pretty receptive to swapping internals. Not like the 3.8's. Be a whole lot cheaper.

Yikes, look like the timing belt let go.

I don't remember hearing of anyone breaking a chain. I'm sure it happens, just not a common issue with these motors. Even into the 300k range. I'd guess broken spring. Obviously just a guess though.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - It fits!

I haven't been able to look at the cylinder yet as I ran out of time last night. If I have to take it to the machine shop, I may as well pay to have it bored .030 over. I am looking a forged stroker kits now. I guess go big or go home....

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - It fits!

Looks like a ring land let go and the piston chunk bounced around inside. If the cylinder wall is fine just pop a new piston in there and hone the cylinder.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - It fits!

I'll know more when I have time to inspect. I ran out of time last night. Hoping the cylinder is good. I don't want to clog up Brandon's thread with my motor issues though.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - It fits!

Not much to report today. I run out of daylight pretty quickly now. I got the old 60e all cleaned up and put on craigslist. Let's see how much this little gem will net me. I should do pretty well considering the recent rebuild and low miles. A clean case doesn't hurt either!

Also started working on some sort of guide for boxing the frame where I cleared for the compressor. This one's for you IDJ. It's just a start, but you gotta start somewhere!
