Pan is on.

Debating on which oil filter adapter to go with.

That's where it sits till I get the knock sensors.

Can't wait to hear it run again.

Re: Project LQ4 - Another S-10 V8 Swap

What oil filter do you want to run the other question??

I assume one is from the old oil pan and the one from the newer pan and perhaps they take different oil filters.

I guess I really don't have a preference on which filter I want to run. The one on the left is from the old pan. I'll probably just stick with the one that came in the new pan. From what I understand, at some point after '01 or '02, GM switched to metric threads. I bought a filter for an '07 Silverado and it fits. I've already researched bigger/longer filters and there are some.

Re: Project LQ4 - Another S-10 V8 Swap

99-07 ran the same filters pretty much. Either a 1042 short or a 1522 long filter, using napa wix numbers.

07.5-13 use 7060 short or 7045 long if I remember right. It's not like it makes a difference though, one just holds 1/4th more of oil.

The cheapest stuff they sell will run great in these engines.

^Interesting.

You're right, it just looks funny to me having that tiny little filter hanging out in that huge recess in the pan. Especially when I'm used to changing the coffee can size filter on the '84 K10.

Re: Project LQ4 - Another S-10 V8 Swap

The rest of the engine looks so clean, I almost didn't notice that the crank pulley is all rusty. Lol

Ha! I promise, after it's installed you won't be able to see 99% of the engine. My biggest reason for cleaning it, is because it's sooo much nicer working on a clean motor.

Knock sensors FINALLY arrived (all the way form Germany)

And that pretty much wraps up the engine. Just need to handle the steam pipe, and I have a drill and tap on order for that.

Really, the next step is going to be working the harness. I don't see much sense in diving into that until the motor is in the truck

So, I guess, the next item on the agenda is converting the 80e from 4wd to 2wd. I think this "kit" should have everything I need to convert. I will email to confirm. Also debating on doing a full rebuild while it's apart.

First step for the transmission was removing the broken flexplate bolt

Clean engines are always nicer. :th_thumb-up:

Well, you do have a reputation to uphold in the trans department... lol

Re: Project LQ4 - Another S-10 V8 Swap

Looks like, by the time it's all said and done, I'll be better off selling my working 4wd 80e and finding a high mileage or roached 2wd 80e that I can rebuild.

http://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic-transmission/1071263-4l80-4wd-2wd-what-do-i-need.html

Shooting from the hip, the parts just for the conversion would be over $200. That wouldn't include any actual rebuild parts. I'm still going to talk to the old guy at the trans shop around the corner.

Re: Project LQ4 - Another S-10 V8 Swap

I guy I met at the drag strip has an 81 Camaro and will be doing an lq4 swap, but the kicker is that it will be carburetored.

Re: Project LQ4 - Another S-10 V8 Swap

Been putting off the exhaust manifold removal. I've heard/seen horror stories of broken bolts. Unfortunately, my setup was no exception. I consider myself lucky though. Only broke one, and it snapped at the head. Once the other bolts were out, I grabbed what was left with vise grips and backed it out.

I'm thinking these will be my headers.

No sense in spending the big dollars on long tubes if I'm planning a turbo build eventually.

Re: Project LQ4 - Another S-10 V8 Swap

You may aswell just stick with the stock manifolds if you end goal in a turbo setup.

Nearly every single turbo kit for the trucks use the factory drivers side manifold and those systems push 500-700whp no problem.

Unless the rear of the manifold doesn't fit inside the engine bay. Maybe camaro or GTO manifolds will and you could save money.

Re: Project LQ4 - Another S-10 V8 Swap

I'm not opposed to using the stock manifolds. It would definitely help with the budget. Unfortunately, there are no stock manifolds that will work in an S-10 swap. At least according to all the research I've done. A few hundred dollars on headers so I can run it NA for a couple years isn't too bad. I'll set the old manifolds on a shelf for the eventual turbo build.

Re: Project LQ4 - Another S-10 V8 Swap

Just now catching up on your latest project here. You crazy bastard.

I miss your garage. And my modding has ground to a halt since I was last there. On the flip side, everything has worked since. :D

Re: Project LQ4 - Another S-10 V8 Swap

Haha! A little bit of crazy, and a little bit of always needing to be doing something.

We did spend a lot of time working on your car. Mostly just catching up on neglected maintenance. Glad it's all working out for you still.

Re: Project LQ4 - Another S-10 V8 Swap

tubular turbo headers are cooler, then you melt them

But it looks awesome!

I did this today

I managed to find a section of hose that already kind of had the bends I needed. Almost looks factory. I'm going to call this "Plan A"
