Problems with stereo backlighting

I don't know what happened here, but I got in my car after work today and saw this. It's a small, probably 3/4 inch space right in the middle of the stereo that's darker than the rest. I've tried turning the car off and back on a couple times, to no avail. Any ideas anybody?? Oh, and it's a 2006, base model. And it's getting worse!

What do you mean by getting worse? I would say it's a light bulb that's burnt out, but that seems like an awful small area if it's a bulb. Not sure what else it could be, though. I know on the '94 & up Pontiac CD players, it's very common for the single light bulb that lights up the display to go out. I've not heard of that happening to the '04 & newer stereos, but they're fairly new still, so that might be why. I'm sure they'll eventually share the same fate.

There's a few bulbs back there and the middle one goes out a lot. I have the same one out on my stereo.

You can either replace the bulb or replace the head unit.

Wow thanks guys, didn't expect that much help after a couple days of nothing. And I didn't realize others were having this same problem, it's a tedious one that's forsure. But thanks to a good write up, I should have it done in no time. Thanks again!

Mine just started doing the same thing today. I just tapped on the display and it lit back up to the proper way. It's probably burning out. I'd like to upgrade to the 6 disc factory player.
